Suspect in murder of Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll taken into custody: cops

A suspect has been arrested in the slaying of prominent Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll, who was found stabbed to death outside her home last month, police announced Wednesday.

Police have not yet named a suspect and said additional information will be provided “at the appropriate time.”

“While this is an encouraging development in our desire to bring closure to Ms. Woll’s family, it does not represent the conclusion of our work on this case,” Detroit Police Chief James White said in a statement. “Details of the investigation will remain confidential at this time to ensure the integrity of the important measures that remain.”

Woll, president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue, was found dead outside her home in the city’s Lafayette Park neighborhood, east of downtown, on Oct. 21.

Police said they responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive person around 6:30 a.m. Woll had attended a wedding the night before and left about 12:30 a.m., according to police and friends.

Police believe he was stabbed inside before stumbling outside and being seriously injured.

Throughout the investigation, White has insisted that there is no evidence to suggest that the killings were the result of a hate crime.

“We believe that this particular incident was not motivated by anti-Semitism, and that this suspect acted alone,” White told reporters at a news conference on October 23 – when he said investigators were “just short” of naming a suspect.

He said at the time there were “several factors” that led to that conclusion, but declined to elaborate.

Woll’s killing devastated Detroit’s Jewish community, which was already reeling from Hamas’ deadly attacks on Israel.

The beloved 40-year-old activist has led the synagogue since 2022 and is involved in other local Jewish organizations.
