Philadelphia police released video footage Friday of at least one suspect allegedly involved in the shooting of two police officers late Thursday, including one who was fatally shot as the two arrived for their turn at Philadelphia International Airport.
Officer Richard Mendez, 50, was shot and killed when he and another officer responded to the sound of broken glass and attempted to intervene in a car break-in in a parking garage involving three or four people, Interim Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford said in press conference Friday.
The intervention turned into a confrontation with the suspect who opened fire on the officers, authorities said.
Mendez was hit multiple times.
Another officer, Raul Ortiz, 60, was wounded in the arm.
Both were taken to different hospitals where Mendez was pronounced dead.
Ortiz is listed in stable condition.
Mendez was killed three days after celebrating 23 years as a police officer. He is married and has a daughter.
His gun was not found at the scene, police said.
Stanford called the killing a “terrible incident.”

“I want to convey to you that it is devastating to this city to know that this is the type of behavior that is taking place,” he said.
“The type of individual that is out there on the road to take someone’s life in a vehicle that doesn’t belong to them.”
A suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jesus Herman Madera-Duran, was shot and fled the scene in a stolen black Dodge Durango before responding officers arrived.
Philadelphia officer Richard Mendez, 50, was shot and killed Thursday when he intervened in a vehicle break-in while arriving for his shift at Philadelphia International Airport, police said. AP
A short time later, police believe the vehicle arrived at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and dropped off the injured suspect.
Interim Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said investigators have not yet confirmed that Madera-Duran was the shooter or how he was shot.
He said investigators are still trying to identify three additional suspects.
Video released by authorities shows at least one suspect dropping off Madera-Duran at the hospital.
The vehicle was seen pulling into the area with EMTs.
The suspect dragged Madera-Duran out of the SUV and got back inside and drove away.
The vehicle was found on fire Friday after investigators were able to use an airborne tag tracking device in the SUV, police said.
A $148,000 reward is being offered for information in the case.
