Suvra Mukherjee was the First Lady of India (serving from 2012 until her death in 2015); wife of India’s thirteenth president, Pranab Mukherjee. He died of respiratory disease at the age of 74 on 18 August 2015.

Suvra Mukherjee was born on Tuesday, 17 September 1940 (age 74 years; at death) in Jessore, Bengal, British India (Now in Narail district, Khulna division, Bangladesh). He had migrated to Kolkata at the age of 10 in 1950, after the partition of India in 1947. He holds two postgraduate degrees, in Political Science and in History.

Speaking about her relationship with her husband in an interview with the Times of India in 2012, she said,
“We are not like a couple today. It’s not a friendly relationship and we don’t express our emotions openly. It’s all in the mind and heart. We don’t really engage in a little love story. At our age, it’s more about depending on each other wholeheartedly. His love for me is different. Every day, after bath, he comes to me, touches my forehead and recites some mantras. He does this every day of the year and yesterday was no exception. This is how he expresses his love. We’ve been married for 55 years and we haven’t fought a single day!”
The couple had three children; two sons and a daughter – Abhijit Mukherjee (Politician), Indrajit Mukherjee (Technical Analyst) & Sharmistha Mukherjee (Dancer & Politician).

Suvra has also tried her hand at writing. He wrote two books:
Chokher Aloey: Chokher Aloey is a personal narrative of his close interaction with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Chena Achenai Chin: is a travelogue that recounts his visit to China.
Death
Suvra Mukherjee suffered from a prolonged respiratory illness. He breathed his last on August 18, 2015 at the Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi. After his death, his body was taken to the Lodhi Road electric crematorium, at 13 Talkatora Road in New Delhi where his last rites were performed.
Many prominent political figures including Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh, Sheikh Hasina attended his last rites.

- Suvra Mukherjee admired the philosophy of the great Bengali polymath, Rabindranath Tagore, and persuaded people to know its truth or benefits.
- He is a Rabindra Sangeet vocalist and dancer and has performed globally in Rabindranath Tagore’s dance dramas for many years.
- As a dancer, he started the ‘Gitanjali Troup’, a dance troupe in the late 70s to spread the works of the Bengali polymath, Rabindranath Tagore. He guided and led dance groups for a long time.
- In addition to being musically inclined, he is also a talented painter who has many successful group and solo painting exhibitions to his credit.
- Suvra Mukherjee shares a healthy relationship with popular singer Kumar Sanu. He released many of his albums related to Rabindra Sangeet and devotional music.
- She also worked as a teacher at Birsinghpur Vidyasagar Balika Vidyalaya in West Midnapore’s Ghatal for six months from February 1971 to August 1971. After her death, the school was closed for a day as a mark of respect to the former First Lady.
- Even after becoming the First Lady of India, she was an apolitical person who liked to stay away from politics.
- She revealed in an interview given to the Times of India that she lost a child shortly after birth.
- Suvra went on her last foreign trip in March 2013, to her birthplace in Bangladesh. He and Pranab Mukherji, who was visiting his in-laws for the first time, were greeted in traditional Bengali fashion, with Shankha blowing and ‘uloo dhoni’ and ‘mangal deep’ aarti sung by the crowd.
