She won silver at the 2019 World Championships. Sydney also holds the under-20 world record of 53.60 seconds after setting a youth personal best of 52.75 seconds in 2018. At the 2016 New Balance overseas high school championships, Sydney won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46 seconds, breaking Maxie’s prep record and Lashinda 5 Demus’ world youth record.
McLaughlin began her outdoor season in April 2017 by breaking the national high school record for the 300 m hurdles in 38.90 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational. McLaughlin was awarded the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year in 2015-16 and 2016-17. He is the first athlete in the award’s 15-year history to win it twice. When he won the award for the second time in July 2017, he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated at age 17, and the magazine called him “one of the most dominant high school athletes ever.” After a year at Kentucky, he gave up his NCAA eligibility to turn professional in June 2018, and in October of the same year, he signed a sponsorship contract with New Balance.
