As Sydney’s waste collection issues continue across the city, a local councilor is calling on people to reject the outsourcing of rubbish collection.
Sydney City Council has for years used independent contractors to manage its waste collection, but strikes and labor shortages throughout 2023, following years of Covid-19-related disruption, have pushed residents to tipping point.
With some collections missing for more than four weeks, Labor Councilor Linda Scott fears that people’s health and well-being will continue to be affected by the ongoing lack of waste collection.
Scott, who currently serves as a Labor Councilor on Sydney City Council, and is its former Deputy Lord Mayor, wants Sydneysiders to send a “message” to the Lord Mayor to solve the city’s rubbish crisis before it’s too late.
“After years of inaction on the waste crisis, the people of the City of Sydney are calling for change in 2024,” he said.

In a series of recent Facebook posts, Labor Councilors shared sickening images of red and yellow bins overflowing with large bags of rubbish, shoes, clothes and in some cases, maggots spilling out of the lids, which couldn’t be closed.
“Sydney’s streets are dirty, and our residents are really crying out for help in what is now a public health disaster infested with rats and maggots,” he said.
The original post, shared on the local Erskineville group by a distraught resident of Gowrie Lane, has attracted more than 80 scathing comments so far.
Enthusiastic community members have begun sharing other locations across the city that also miss waste collection.
A supporter of Scott’s petition, wrote in a comment on the Councilor’s Facebook page: “Time for a Clover bin”.

Another wrote: “Same issue the week before in Pyrmont where the recycling bin wasn’t picked up for two weeks”.
“The alleys are full of fleas and flies,” wrote another.
It’s not just trash spilling onto the street, littering the sidewalk that is an issue. An increase in illegal dumping has also been reported across the city by concerned locals.
“It’s time for a change,” Scott told NCA NewsWire.

When the City moved to outsource part of its waste collection services, Scott said he was the only council member who opposed the change.
“As the only member of the council who voted against the privatization of council waste collection, I am very moved to see my warning come true,” he said.
With many local residents using social media platforms to vent their frustration and disgust with the state of “their city”, Scott said Clover Moore cannot continue to keep up with the city’s needs.
“Clover Moore has certainly changed the face of Sydney and done some good, but after 44 years in office – having been elected when Malcolm Fraser was still Prime Minister – he cannot compete with what will be required of Lord Mayor of Sydney in 2024,” he said. .
NCA NewsWire has contacted Sydney City Council for comment.
