Meet Tailei Qi, UNC Shooting Suspect
After a professor in his research department was shot dead, Tailei Qi, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was charged with first-degree murder. Following the shooting at Caudill Labs, which prompted an hours-long lockdown that required students and teachers to barricade themselves in classrooms and dormitories while officers hunted for a suspect, Tailei was arrested Monday afternoon.
The UNC shooting suspect was booked into the Orange County Hillsborough Detention Center and charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds. The event began when students were notified of an armed and dangerous person after 1 p.m. It happened during the second week of the fall semester at UNC.
At 2:24 pm, the university again issued a warning that the suspect was still evading arrest. Photos of the unknown person became public, and the suspect was eventually found in a residential area near the university. Social media users posted videos of terrified students hiding in classrooms and some climbing through windows of school buildings. Around 4:15 p.m., the restrictions were lifted.
The lockdown, which also affected a nearby public school, is continuing, according to UNC Police Chief Brian James, as authorities confirm the suspect’s identity and look into rumors of more possible victims. “We have to make sure the whole campus is safe,” he said on Monday.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the shooting. To inform the victim’s family, the victim who was previously described as a university faculty member was not immediately identified. Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Division of Applied Physical Sciences, was identified as the shooting victim on an arrest warrant.

In Monday’s incident, the gun was not immediately found, but investigators said they would question the suspect to find out why. “We would certainly like the opportunity to interview the suspect,” James said. “To actually arrest the suspect gives us a chance to find out why. And also how, and also help us to uncover the motives and … really why this is happening today.”
According to the Alamance County court, the suspect was pulled over by police two days before the shooting and ticketed for going over the speed limit by about 20 mph on the interstate.
Tailei Qi’s career
Graduate student Tailei Qi is enrolled in the applied physical sciences program at UNC Chapel Hill. He studies arrays of optically trapped nanoparticles and various interesting phenomena connected to them. In addition to 2D TMD photodetectors, optical tweezers (continuous wavelength laser and femtosecond laser), microspectroscopy (Raman, fluorescence, SHG, SEM, TEM, XDS, XPS, XRD), and superconductor 2G HTS, he also has experience in the field this.
Tailei is also interested in machine learning and the synthesis and self-assembly of nanoparticles. He likes trekking and running. He once won the 800m race and finished sixth in the 1500m.
Tailei works as a Researcher at the Suzhou Advanced Materials Research Institute. He worked there from 2015 to 2017. After that, he joined Universiti Sains & Teknologi Selatan as a Research Assistant until 2019.
Furthermore, Tailei obtained his BS and BAM degrees from Wuhan University. He earned his MS in Materials Science from Louisiana State University.

On the same day, he wrote, “what is the truth?” One post in June read, “When this type of girl shows her ‘best’ to beg others to ‘help’ me, everyone then looks down on me. like an angel.” It is not clear who he is referring to. He also wrote, “There are many counter-intuitive situations in society: the minimum wage does more harm than good to protect the poor; gender quotas are not to protect women but to increase discrimination.”
