Singer Taylor Swift is a singer, songwriter, and master of human emotion, but is she ready to direct her first feature film?
The “Gorgeous” singer was behind the camera for her music videos “The Man,” “Cardigan,” and “Willow” before she wrote, directed and starred in “All Too Well: The Short Film,” which also stars “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien and “Stranger Things” alum Sadie Sink.
On Friday, September 9, the “Delicate” singer appeared at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her short film was screened in 35mm for the first time. While at the event, Taylor talked about possibly directing his first feature film.

Taylor Swift Says She Might Direct Feature Film After ‘All Too Well: The Short Film’ Success

As The Hollywood Reporter shared late Friday night, it’s possible the “I Bet You Think About Me” singer is looking to direct a feature film. In addition to screening the short film “All Too Well,” the 32-year-old singer also appeared on “In Conversation With…” to discuss her potential future career plans.
“If it’s the right thing, it will be a privilege and an honor,” Taylor said at the event, revealing that he’d rather focus on a film about “human emotion” than any big-budget action sequence.

“I will always want to tell human stories about human emotions,” he says, before crediting fellow female directors like Nora Ephron, Chloe Zhao, and Greta Gerwig, as influences for his own directing career.
“It’s wonderful that we’re in a place where the idea of a female filmmaker doesn’t make you roll your eyes or think skeptically like it used to,” she continued, discussing her “evolution” into a film director first writing songs, and then trying to coordinate words and music to storyboards and shot lists.

‘The More Responsibility I Take On, The Happier I Am’

During the conversation, the “Cruel Summer” singer openly admitted that she didn’t go to film school, revealing that a lot of her hands-on experience actually came from being on the set of her own music videos.
“I didn’t go to film school. I have been on the set of around 60 music videos and I have learned a lot from the process,” he said at the event. “But when I did it myself, I really started learning everything, because you have to.”
Taylor explained that “creating the visuals” was “always part of the process” and that he liked to involve himself in the creation of his music videos early in his career, saying, “The more responsibility I take on, the happier I am.”

He also discussed a bit more about his influences, specifically his 1989 album, which he says was inspired by repeatedly watching John Hughes’ iconic film “Sixteen Candles.” He also said that he was “in awe” of Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape Of Water,” which he watched during the shutdown of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In my mind, there was a period in the 1970s where you started seeing romantic movies where the characters were so beautifully intertwined, and then it unraveled,” Taylor said, pointing to “Kramer vs. Kramer” as another from him inspiration.

As part of the event, the “You Belong With Me” singer screened “All Too Well: The Short Film” for the first time on 35mm. Taylor had nothing but praise for Dylan O’Brien and Sadie Sink and specifically referenced the fight sequence that takes place at a pivotal point in the film.
“You can tell a lot about people by the way they fight,” he said of their fights. “He felt out of place and he didn’t feel ready to deal with it.”

Although Taylor has seen his own film many times before, he felt that he learned something new from watching it on Friday, September 9, at the Toronto Film Festival.
“I feel like watching it this time, there’s a depth of color and contrast that I’ve never seen when I’ve watched it before,” he said, adding, “I’m grateful to share it with you all.”
