Taylor Swift Is No Longer Searchable On X After Explicit AI Images Went Viral

Social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) limited searches for Taylor fastThe name after the obvious forgery without the star’s consent circulated online. The image prompted a massive reporting campaign, which led to the suspension of accounts that shared it.

On Saturday, social media users observed that searches for pop star Taylor Swift’s name on the X platform were restricted following the spread of explicit, non-consensual deepfake content featuring the pop star on Wednesday.

Attempting to search for Swift’s name on X results in an error message, “Something happened. Try reloading.”

Deepfakes use AI to generate fictitious images or manipulate real photos by “undressing” them, and an apparent deepfake from the hitmaker “Out of the Woods” depicts it in compromising and disturbing sexual scenarios.

At the time of writing, the origin of the offending image remains unclear. However, they have watermarks that indicate a potential connection to a site known for sharing fake nude celebrity images through “AI deepfake” technology.

The recent incident involving a misleading AI-generated image of Swift comes as concerns are raised about the potential misuse of AI-generated content for disinformation campaigns during this year’s upcoming United States presidential election.

Speak to CNNBen Decker, founder and CEO of Memetica, said: “This is a prime example of how AI is being unleashed for many nefarious reasons without adequate fences to protect the public square.”

Decker highlighted the rapid increase in the exploitation of generative AI tools to create malicious content targeting various public figures.

He expressed concern about the lack of “effective plans” by social media companies to monitor such content, as X has faced criticism in the past for a delayed response to sexually explicit falsification on its platform.

Decker stated: “This shows the kind of simplification of content and governance of larger platforms that is destructive because if all the stakeholders – AI companies, social media companies, regulators and civil society – are not talking about the same things and on the same page about how to address this issue, this type of content will only continue to proliferate.”

Taylor Swift Targeted By AI Deep Fakes Could Prompt Action From Lawmakers

However, Decker emphasized that targeting Swift, arguably the biggest pop star in the world, could draw increased attention to the problems that arise with AI-generated imagery. He suggests that similar attention may be gained when it comes to harmful AI-generated content.

He said: “When you have a figure like Taylor Swift of this magnitude [targeted]maybe this is what’s driving action from lawmakers and tech companies because they can’t afford to have America’s sweetheart in a public campaign against them.”

Noting Swift’s huge influence on the internet, Decker added: “I think they need to make her feel better because she probably carries more influence than almost anyone else on the internet.”

After the disturbing AI images of Swift went viral, reports claim the singer is “furious” and intends to take legal action against the fake adult film site that published the images. Swift herself has yet to address the issue publicly.
