Taylor Swift Responds To ‘Anti-Hero’ Music Video Backlash

Taylor Swift is listening to the social media conversation and making an important change!

Yesterday, The Blast shared the latest on Taylor Swift’s new music video for “Anti-Hero,” the first single from her tenth album “Midnights.”

The music video for the album’s third track premiered on Friday, October 21, which was the same day the album was released to the world. Swift promoted the video on social media as well, revealing the concept of the music video was inspired by the concept of collective insecurity.

He invited fans to “watch my nightmare scenarios and disturbing thoughts play out in real time” in his post.

Fans immediately took to social media to chat about the music video, praising and voicing their displeasure about certain scenes.

The scene in question depicts Swift stepping on a scale and apparently reacting to her response, which reads “fat.”

Almost a week after the release of “Midnights” and the start of the social media conversation surrounding the “Anti-Hero” music video, Swift confirmed her awareness of the conversation and responded in a notable way!

Read on to find out how Swift reacted to the reception of the “Anti-Hero” music video!

Examining Discussion of ‘Anti-Hero’ Music Videos on Social Media

Tweets alleging the inclusion of fatphobic themes and the general concept of fatphobia in the music video began circulating on Friday after its premiere.

One tweet brought up a previous example of a celebrity listening to critical responses and making changes as a result.

The tweet read, “When @lizzo had a word that was deemed capable in one of his songs, he apologized and corrected it. Thousands of disabled people talk about it. The same goes for Beyoncé. But Taylor has a fatphobic image and it’s ‘you don’t get it’ aimed at fat people?”

The tweet resonated with many Twitter users, but many readers did not.

Several Twitter users came to Swift’s defense in thread replies as well as in their own tweets.

“If you think Taylor Swift is phobic because she talks about her crippling eating disorder then you are the problem. If you think anytime people with eating disorders talk about their problems it’s phobic, you’re facilitating the idea that people shouldn’t talk about it,” one fan tweeted.

“This is so wrong,” another fan tweeted, “So Taylor can share her eating disorder in a documentary and be celebrated for speaking out but you’re going to call her fatphobia when it shows up in her art? You can’t choose the insecurities he shares with us…” they said.

Swift Confirms She’s Heard Critical Reception Of ‘Anti-Hero’ Music Video

This particular tweet was made in response to certain changes made to the music video.

Earlier today, word began to spread on Twitter that the scene had been edited out on Apple Music.

The change was made without fanfare; Swift has not made a statement addressing the situation as of this writing.

@LoverAtPeace, a Twitter user who has voiced their displeasure about the social media discourse in the tweet we included above, called for the scene to be restored.

“Please re-edit,” their tweet concluded.

The AV Club shared their take on the matter in their report on the video’s edit, “The deletion of the scene without comment only further removes Swift from the conversation she apparently wanted to delve into in the first place.”

Many ‘Swifties’ came to Swift’s defense, expressing their support for Swift portraying her insecurities in the video in the first place.

@getawayhaunted tweeted, “@taylorswift13 I heard you edited your video and I just wanted to say that some of us see the truth in your situation and your intentions. I love you and don’t feel bad for sharing your experience.”

The change was not only met with critical discontent.

A Twitter user responded to the news with tweets, “A friendly reminder that fat is not a feeling. As an obese person with an eating disorder, it was heartbreaking to see the music part of the ‘Anti-Hero’ video. I’m glad it got edited on Apple Music. Thank you @taylorswift13 @taylornation for making it better!”

Swift released the music video for “Bejeweled” yesterday, marking the release of the second music video for “Midnights.”
