An Arizona high school teacher has been removed from her classroom for allegedly dressing up as the devil and greeting students entering her class with “Satan’s Hail.”
Mesa High School sophomore Nathaniel Hamlet alleges his teacher walked into class Wednesday wearing devil horns and carrying a pitchfork, which he waved over the students’ heads as they entered the room to say “Hail Satan.”
“Some people think it’s funny, some people don’t like it, some people are like ‘whatever,’ they just blow it off,” Hamlet told 12 News.
It’s unclear whether the teacher dressed up in anticipation of Halloween or because it was school spirit week — but Hamlet, a devout Christian, said he was offended and repeatedly asked the educator to stop.
“I said, ‘Don’t do that to me’ and I pushed him away [the pitchfork] go maybe three or four times,” said the teenager.
“And he still says it and still does it,” he said.

Hamlet then told his father, Chris Hamlet, a former Mesa Public Schools board candidate, who reported the incident to the principal.
“Of course, I’m angry because I’m a Christian too,” said the older Hamlet. “What really stood out to me was, she kept telling him no, and the teacher kept holding back.”
The teacher, who has not been publicly identified, was not in the classroom the next day and has not returned since.

Mesa Public Schools said the educator has been placed on paid administrative leave while it investigates.
“I feel like that’s fair, but he did it over and over to everybody,” the teenager said. “So I think he should probably be fired.”
His father agreed, telling the outlet, “I don’t think it’s OK, kidding or not. If you want to keep the Christian thing away, then you have to keep the devil worshiper thing away.”
Other parents told 12 News that while they didn’t agree with what the teacher did, they felt he shouldn’t have been fired for the incident. 12 News
Other parents who did not want to give their names to 12 News said that while they don’t agree with what the teacher did, they feel he shouldn’t have been fired for the incident.
In a statement, Mesa Public Schools said it is investigating what happened.
“Mesa Public Schools administration was notified of an alleged incident at Mesa Middle School late Wednesday afternoon after school,” the district said.
“Our Human Resources Department began an investigation Thursday morning and placed the teacher on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The investigation is still ongoing.”
