Mellencamp credits her family for being her support system through this journey. The mother of three, Slate, 10, Cruz, 8, and Dove, 2, with husband Edwin Arroyave, shared a melanoma update in early October to help bring awareness to the topic.
“Melanoma awareness update. Although I was worried, I listened to my doctor’s advice and went for my 3 month skin check last week since my previous melanoma. They said I had another abnormal spot near my last spot so they did a biopsy. I got a call this morning: Stage 2 melanoma,” her caption began. “Now, next Wednesday I go to the oncologist to cut it out and make a game plan for the next step. Of course, this is all pending some additional tests and another nearby biopsy taken today. Moral of the story: if the doctor says, “go in every 3 months” please log in every 3 months.”

“What Can Happen in Three Months?”
The reality star went on to explain that she only wanted to cancel the appointment thinking “What could happen in three months?”
“Looks like a lot,” the caption continued. “I continue to share this journey because I was still a teenager in the 90s, putting baby oil and iodine on my skin to tan it. Never wore sunscreen or checked my moles until I was 40. This has been a wake-up call for me, and I hope for all of you, to love and protect the skin you have.”
