Teenage driver of SUV that crushed passengers during stunt is hit with assault charge

The teenage driver of a vehicle that overturned and crushed his five young passengers who were hanging out the window while he was on a stunt in Colorado has been hit with an updated vehicular assault charge.

Marisol Wentling, 19, was driving an SUV that was captured in a graphic video rolling while making donuts in Colorado Springs just after 10 p.m. Saturday, the police said.

Its five thrill-seeking passengers, who were sitting on the door panels during the dangerous maneuver, suffered life-threatening injuries when the SUV landed on top of them.

All five of them are juveniles, police said. Two have been released from hospital while the other three are still in a critical but stable condition, police tweeted.

Wentling was initially charged with reckless driving. He was hit with an additional count of vehicular assault, according to Colorado Springs police.

The young woman, who was not seriously injured, was seen with several cuts on her nose in her mug shot.

The harrowing footage shows people rushing to help in the car park of the Market in Spring Creek, but the person filming the shocking incident warned them not to overturn the vehicle.

“No, there’s someone over there! There’s someone over there, don’t flip, don’t flip!” She spoke.

Francis Barclay, who works for Jolly Christmas Trees in the lot where the accident happened, said he has seen groups making donuts in the past.

“It seems to me, since I’ve been doing this for five years, it’s getting more and more frequent,” Barclay told KRDO. “It’s like every third or fourth night here, there’s somebody out here screeching a tire. I see a lot of activity.”

Barclay said he was sad for the victim, but not entirely surprised after the reckless driving he witnessed.

“I think for the child. I hope they survive, and if they survive, I hope they don’t do it again,” he told the outlet.
