Tejashwi Yadav is an Indian politician from the state of Bihar. He is the youngest of nine children of Indian politician Lalu Yadav.

Tejashwi Yadav was born on Thursday, 9 November 1989 (age 33; in 2022), in Gopalganj, Bihar. His full name is Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. He also uses the name Tarun. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. Tejashwi spent his early years of schooling in Patna and then went to Delhi for further education. He studied at Delhi Public School in Hemant Vihar till class five, and then, till class eight at DPS, RK Puram. Although Tejashwi is average in academics, he is always ahead when it comes to sports and extracurricular activities. He was drawn towards cricket early in his childhood. He was part of the school cricket team and represented the team in various tournaments. Cricket enthusiast Tejashwi Yadav dropped out of school in the middle of ninth grade to make a full-time career in cricket. After that, he represented the Delhi state cricket team in various tournaments and also played a Ranji Trophy season for Jharkhand. After failing to make a mark in cricket, Tejashwi Yadav gave up the sport and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and enter politics.

Parents & Siblings

Tejashwi Yadav was born to Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi. Both his parents collectively served as the chief minister of Bihar in different periods for about 15 years. He is the youngest of Lalu Yadav’s nine children. He has one brother, Tej Pratap Yadav (politician), and seven sisters, Misa Bharti (politician), Rohini Acharya, Chanda Singh, Ragini Yadav, Hema Yadav, Anushka Rao, and Raj Laxmi.

On 9 December 2021, he married his Delhi-based long-time girlfriend Rachel Godinho now known as Rajeshwari Yadav at Delhi’s Sainik Farm.

On March 27, 2023, Tejashwi and Rachel Godinho were blessed with a baby girl, Katyayani; the name was chosen by Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Cricket Career

While playing for the Delhi under-19 team, Tejashwi was signed by Delhi Daredevils ahead of IPL 2009. He remained a part of the Delhi Daredevils squad for four seasons from 2009 to 2012; however, he did not get a chance to play a single match in all the four IPL seasons.

He played several domestic cricket matches for Jharkhand in Ranji Trophy 2009, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2009, and Vijay Hazare Trophy 2010. In the seven domestic matches Tejashwi played in his cricket career, he scored only 37 runs and took one wicket. On 16 February 2010, Tejashwi played his last professional cricket match, which was played between Jharkhand and Tripura in Cuttack.

Political career

After Tejashwi realized that he had minimal chances of making a successful career in cricket, politics might be his next stop. He made his first public speech in 2010, campaigning for the RJD ahead of the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections. In the 2015 Bihar Assembly elections, Tejashwi, at the age of 26, successfully contested and won his first constituency from Raghopur constituency. His party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), won 81 seats and formed a coalition with the Janata Dal (United) whose total number of seats was 70. Following the formation of the RJD-JDU coalition government in Bihar in 2015, Tejashwi Yadav was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.

In 2017, the CBI filed a “land for hotel” scam case against Tejashwi Yadav and his family members, including father Lalu Yada and mother Rabri Devi. The case led to the fall of the RJD-JDU coalition government in 2017, when the JD(U) withdrew its support from the RJD and formed a new government with the BJP in Bihar. Tejashwi served as Bihar’s deputy CM from November 2015 to July 2017. He blamed the BJP government at the center for playing vendetta politics by implicating his name in a corruption case dating back to 2004. In an interview, while dismissing the allegations against him, he said,

They brought a 2004 case against me. How could I become a criminal at 13 or 14, I didn’t have a moon (moustache) then!”

At the age of 27, Tejashwi Yadav became India’s youngest opposition leader. He continued as the leader of the opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2020. In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, Tejashwi Yadav won the election from the Bihar Assembly seat with a margin of 38000 votes. His party, the RJD, emerged as the single largest party in the state; however, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power with a majority of seats. On 10 August 2022, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar for the second time.

Controversy

  • On New Year’s Eve 2008, Tejashwi Yadav and his brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, were allegedly beaten up by some anonymous men for teasing a girl at a party in Delhi.
  • On 16 April 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a charge sheet against Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu Yadav, and Rabri Yadav for corruption in awarding the maintenance contract of two IRCTC hotels to a private firm. The charges leveled against them include criminal conspiracy (120-B), cheating (420), and bribery under the IPC. Later, the Delhi court granted bail in the case to the three.
  • On October 5, 2020, an FIR was filed against Tejashwi Yadav, his brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, and four others accused of murdering former RJD chief Shakti Mallik.
  • According to data shared by My Neta, an open data storage platform, Tejashwi has 11 criminal cases against him; however, he was never convicted in any of them.
  • On 11 March 2023, the CBI summoned him for questioning in the ‘land for jobs’ case. This is the second time the agency has called him in the case; earlier, he was summoned by the agency on February 4, 2023. According to the CBI, irregularities were found in the appointment of Group D posts in different zones of Indian Railways between 2004 and 2009, and posts were allotted to people in exchange for land by unknown civil servants . On July 3, 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a charge sheet in a Delhi court against Tejashwi, as well as his parents, Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi, along with 14 other individuals. The charge sheet related to “fraud of land for employment.”

Facts/Trivia

  • While serving as the minister of the road construction department in Bihar, Tejashwi introduced a WhatsApp number where people could send their complaints about damaged roads in their area. According to the executive engineer who monitors WhatsApp messages, the number received 47000 messages on WhatsApp out of which 44000 were from girls who proposed Tejashwi Yadav for marriage.
