Tesla Rethinks Auto Pilot Feature, Recalls Nearly All Of It’s Vehicles

Tesla is taking almost all of its vehicles off US roads due to problems with its Autopilot system!

The multinational automotive company has been pushing its self-driving features for years, hoping to give its customers the satisfaction of having their cars drive for them. Unfortunately, after an investigation revealed several crashes involving the Autopilot system, their engineers needed to develop better software.

Tesla Is Recalling Most Of Its Vehicles To Improve Its Autopilot Features

Tesla is recalling nearly all of its 2 million cars on US roads after rejecting its driver assistance features, including Autopilot and “Full Self Driving.” The company insists this system will make driving safer than a fully human-controlled car; however, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration begs to differ.

NHTSA has been studying accident reports involving Tesla’s Autopilot and Autosteer functions for more than two years, revealing about 1,000 crashes in which these features were used. US safety regulators believe this self-driving software gives drivers a false sense of security.

Because drivers feel safe using the Autopilot and Autosteer functions, NHTSA notes that these features can be abused when Tesla’s technology cannot safely navigate the road without driver input. Safety organizations are asking automotive companies to recall their vehicles for essential updates to avoid this dangerous scenario.

According to a statement from NHTSA, Tesla’s over-the-air software update will give the brand’s cars a better monitoring system. When Autopilot’s “Autosteer” function is activated, the driver will receive more warnings to pay attention to the road. This notification, per CNN Businesswill ensure drivers keep their hands on the wheel and watch the road.

Tesla isn’t risking its drivers’ safety with a new software update that promises to regularly check the driver’s level of attention while the Autosteer feature is on. If the driver repeatedly fails to heed prompts advising them to focus on the road, the system may disengage the Autopilot feature.

This function can also be turned off automatically by the car’s system when the vehicle approaches a traffic control or when driving on a highway that requires driver input. In their letter to Tesla, NHTSA confirmed that the automotive giant has agreed to the software update and began recalling their vehicles on Tuesday, December 12.

As noted, NHTSA’s investigation found several crashes involving Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features. This function is involved in situations that require the driver’s attention, an issue highlighted by safety regulators in their letter to Tesla. In the organization’s words:

“In certain circumstances when Autosteer is used, the prominence and scope of feature controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver abuse [of the feature.]”

NHTSA states that when drivers are not fully engaged and prepared to take control of the car, “there may be an increased risk of a crash.” This problem is expected to be resolved after the Tesla recall and software update.

Elon Musk Tells Tesla Employees To Return To Pandemic Office

A year before Tesla was forced to recall its vehicles, its CEO Elon Musk threatened to fire his employees if they did not return to the office. Social distancing restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have seen many office workers continue their work from home.

However, the billionaire businessman only believes his Tesla employees do their best if they do it from the office. Musk allegedly asked his workforce to return to the office for at least forty hours a week, or they would lose their jobs, according to leaked emails posted online.

The SpaceX founder wrote in the message, “Anyone who wants to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours a week or leave Tesla. This is less than we ask of factory workers.”

Musk insisted that employees must work at “Tesla’s main office, not remote branch offices unrelated to job duties.” In an email, the 52-year-old said he would personally review any requests for exemptions from this policy and approve them on a case-by-case basis.

However, he would like to see people back in the office immediately. “If you do not show up, we will assume you have resigned,” he explained in the email. Additionally, he seemed to defend his decision to work in the office by stating:

“Tesla has and will create and actually manufacture the most interesting and meaningful products of any company on Earth. This is not going to happen by calling him.”
