A Texas convenience store clerk was shot and killed after he chased down a pair of shoplifters who stole bags of chips on Friday, police said.
One of the alleged robbers opened fire on the store manager around 11:30 a.m. after he followed the couple in his car to stop them from stealing chips from a Sunoco gas station store in Humble, Texas, police said.
The 42-year-old worker, who has not been identified, was hit by a bullet and died from his injuries.
“No one expects to just go to work that day and not come home,” a humble Assistant Police Chief Dan Zientek told reporters at the scene.
Surveillance footage at the store obtained by KPRC shows the two men dressed in dark clothing enter the store as the store manager follows behind them with a bucket and begins mopping the floor.

The man walks around before stopping in an alley in front of a chip shop, where a man is seen putting a bag in his pants, the video shows. They spend a minute or so inside the store before leaving without paying.
The store clerk followed them outside and confronted them verbally before they left the store, according to the footage.
The worker then got into his car and followed the couple, police said.

“They started shooting at him, where he tried to reverse his car and ended up in the median there,” Zientek said, according to KPRC.
He was hit by one of the bullets in the bunker and died while still sitting in the driver’s seat, police said.
The car was riddled with bullets at the scene, local stations reported.
The suspect fled the scene on foot and remains at large. Police are asking the public to help identify the two.
“You’ve lost a great citizen who was just trying to work and do their job, and instead we have two people who have also ruined their lives because they’re going to jail,” Zientek said.
Police said the victim had only been working for three to four months, according to KTRK.
