Texas fair shooting suspect ID’d as videos show chaotic aftermath as hundreds fled

Dallas police have identified a suspect in a shooting Saturday night at the State Fair of Texas that injured three people and sent hundreds of partygoers fleeing in fear.

Police arrested 22-year-old Cameron Turner and charged him with three counts of aggravated assault after the shooter turned the family-friendly event into chaos.

Fairgoers posted videos to social media showing the impact.

Video posted on X taken from the top of the Ferris wheel showed a panicked crowd quickly heading for the exits shortly after gunshots rang out in the fairground food court around 7:45 p.m.

“Not what you want to see on top of a ferris wheel at the state fair of texas,” one user commented on X.

Another video posted on TikTok shows the inside of a fairground rodeo when a voice over the public address system can be heard telling people “There’s an active shooter outside” and then calling for EMTs.

Several rodeo spectators jumped fences to escape to safety across the rodeo arena, ignoring the announcer’s warning that there was a bull breaking out of their pen.

Police said Turner opened fire and fled the scene before being arrested a short distance away. Three people were shot, two adult men and one adult woman, who suffered non-life threatening injuries and are listed in stable condition. A gun was recovered from the scene.

Another video posted on X showed many terrified partygoers, some of them crying, streaming into a building not far from the center of the street at the behest of event staff, a chorus of screams echoing down the cement-covered hallway.

Inside post on X, Dallas District 7 City Councilman Adam Bazaldua said the shooting was sparked by a conflict between two people who knew each other. He also denounced Texas’ permitless carry law.

“It is one thing to have the right to bear arms, another law, such as carrying without a permit, which facilitates such senseless acts of gun violence in our state,” Bazaldua said.

In his own X positionDallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson called the exhibit a “precious event,” and expressed outrage at the violence.

“We will not tolerate this behavior,” he wrote.

According to WFAA, Turner told police he was drinking at a food court when a group of people approached him. He claimed he “felt threatened” and discharged his weapon in self-defense.

This year marks the 137th year of the State Fair of Texas, which will be attended by more than 2.5 million people in 2022.
