Texas Gov. Greg Abbott endorses Donald Trump for president

Texas Governor Greg Abbott officially endorsed former President Donald Trump Sunday at an event near the Texas-Mexico border.

Abbott showered Trump with praise while arguing that a second term for the 77-year-old would address the country’s growing list of woes – including the border crisis.

“We need a president who will control the border. We need a president who will restore law and order in the United States, not let these criminals rob the stores you see images of almost every night,” Abbott declared.

“We need a president who will restore world peace, as opposed to the outbreak of war under Joe Biden. We need Donald J. Trump back as our President of the United States.”

Abbott’s endorsement was teased before the event. He is the latest Republican governor to back the GOP front-runner and run the nation’s largest red state.

The Texas primary is scheduled for March 5, the day after Trump heads to trial on four counts of alleged meddling in the 2020 election. Trump’s lawyers are working to move the date.

So far at least seven of the 26 sitting GOP governors have endorsed Trump. Earlier this month, during the third Republican debate, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders endorsed Trump.

Abbott is a three-term governor who has generated 2024 buzz himself but ultimately declined to run. His predecessors Rick Perry and George W. Bush all ran for president.

Both Trump and Abbott greeted Border Patrol agents during an event in Edinburg, Texas Sunday.

Trump said he would “make the governor’s job easier” in a brief 10-minute speech that referred to the immigration malaise plaguing the Lone Star State.

“Our country is going to hell,” Trump said. “We have some people who either they don’t care, they’re not very smart or they hate our country, and nobody really knows the answer.”

Under Abbott, Texas has run Operation Lone Star, an operation that has moved immigrants to blue-chip strongholds like New York City, Chicago and Washington, DC.

Trump has a 44.5 percentage point lead over his GOP arch-rival, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.
