The show will take place next month at a Texas high school following the controversy that erupted when a large part in the school’s production of “Oklahoma!” was taken from a transgender man.
Tickets are now on sale for the production, which will run January 19-21, the Dallas Morning News reports. It was previously suspended by the Sherman Independent School District amid pushback against policies on gender, as well as the play’s content.
Sherman High School senior Max Hightower, a transgender man, lost the lead role in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical when the administration announced last month that only boys could play male parts and girls could only play female parts.
After widespread outrage, the school reversed the decision but said the production would use a “juvenile” version of the play, which premiered on Broadway in 1943, which would disrupt adult themes, profane language and sexual content.
After an emotional school board meeting in November, trustees reversed the decision and decided that the original show could continue in the new year.
Other students have also lost their parts, including some girls who were assigned male roles. Max is set to play Ali Hakim, a man.

Philip Hightower, Max’s father, told the Dallas Morning News that the decision was “a good start.”
School board president Brad Morgan apologized to the community for the drama. “We understand that our decision does not erase this impact on our community, but we hope that we will reinforce to everyone, especially our students, that we accept all of the goals of our Board of Directors, including addressing the diverse needs of our students. and empower them to succeed in a diverse and complex world.”

The controversy has sparked conversations about district leadership, however.
Several families called for Superintendent Tyson Bennett, who has drawn national backlash from LGBTQ activists, to be ousted, and the school board voted to fire him from overseeing the fine arts program.
The district will also open a third-party investigation into the situation, according to reports.
