A Texas man whose estranged wife refused to get back together shot and killed four members of his extended family, including his 8-year-old nephew, before turning the gun on himself, police said.
Alrick “Shawn” Barrett, 46, opened fire at his mother-in-law’s home in Richmond, Texas, about 7 a.m. Saturday after returning his young son from a visit, Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said at a news conference Wednesday.
“The suspect wanted to get into the house, and the grandmother let him into the house,” Fagan said, adding that the woman “didn’t know [about] the intention.”
Once inside, Barrett told his estranged wife he wanted to get back together, but she refused, prompting the estranged husband to open fire, killing his partner, his two adult siblings, his niece and then himself, according to the sheriff.
Deputies responded to the scene on Cory Carnel Lane after getting a 911 call from Barrett’s 13-year-old nephew, who survived the slaughter by hiding in a closet with a 7-year-old and their grandmother.

Authorities had not released the victim’s name as of Thursday, but a woman who identified herself as a grandmother, Hortense Fullerton, wrote in a GoFundMe campaign description that “unexpected violence” claimed the lives of three of her five children, as well as her youngest grandchild.
Fullerton identified his slain loved ones as his daughters, 44-year-old Francia Fullerton, who is Barrett’s wife, and 46-year-old Kacey Fullerton, his son, Omar Fullerton, 43, and his 8-year-old granddaughter, Aniah .
The grandmother also revealed that the mass shooting happened when her family gathered to celebrate a baby shower for her youngest child.

“I’m so excited to have a full house with some of my kids and my big baby,” Fullerton wrote. “I never expected our day of celebration to turn into a day of unimaginable pain and mourning.”
“In just a few minutes, everything changed forever,” he added.
Hortense Fullerton wrote that her murdered daughter, Francia, left behind four children, who would now live with her.

“There are no words to describe this pain,” he lamented.
Sheriff Fagan said that in January, authorities responded to a disturbance call due to a verbal argument between Barrett and his estranged wife.
Detectives are still looking into Barrett’s background but so far have not found any further interaction between the sheriff’s office and the suspect.
