A Houston attorney who drug his estranged wife to an abortion after learning she was pregnant with her third has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation.
Mason Herring, 39, pleaded guilty Wednesday to injury to a child and assault on a pregnant woman.
The attorney, founder and managing partner of the Herring Law Firm was initially charged with felony assault for inducing an abortion.
His wife Catherine Herring, who has filed for divorce, told the courtroom the sentence was too light, saying “I don’t believe that 180 days is justice for trying to kill your son seven separate times.”
She told the courtroom their third child, a 1-year-old girl, was born 10 weeks premature, had developmental delays, and went to therapy eight times a week.

The couple had already separated and attended marriage counseling to try to mend their relationship when she admitted she was pregnant with their third child.
The news, however, did not go down well with Mason, who has since become romantically involved with a co-worker and told his wife the pregnancy “would ruin his plans and make him look like a fool,” according to the affidavit.
Catherine told authorities that in March 2022 her husband began teaching her about hydration and began offering her cloudy water, which she claimed was the result of a dirty water cup or faucet.

After drinking the murky water, Catherine became very ill, convulsing and bleeding profusely before being admitted to hospital, where doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong.
She later became suspicious of her husband and began rejecting his other drinks, including three with “unknown ingredients” and a bottle of orange juice with a broken seal.

Catherine installed a camera in the house, where her husband no longer lives and invited two people as “witnesses” to her visit, where he allegedly tried to give her a drink even though she already had two drinks.
Catherine told investigators that she and her guests saw an “unknown substance” floating in the drink she gave them.
The next day, he also saw the substance in a drink he brought from a fast-food outlet, according to the affidavit.

Not long after she found a package for medication containing misoprostol, a drug used to induce abortion, in a trash can.
Mason’s attorney Dan Codgell thought the plea deal and sentence were reasonable.
“It’s a sad situation and Mason has accepted his responsibility,” Cogdell said.
