The Critics Choice Awards Joins The Other Awards Shows On Low Ratings

Ratings for the Critics’ Choice Awards are in, and like the 2023 Golden Globes, they’re below expectations.

Although the event was graced by Hollywood’s elite and their stunning fashion, the 28th annual event was held on Sunday, January 15, without much fanfare. Despite the obstacles, the ceremony ended with the expected victory for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” in the Best Picture category, among others.

Critics’ Choice Awards Honor Hollywood’s Best Amidst the Most Underachieving Ceremony

When The CW aired the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards over the weekend, none of the executives expected that they would have less than a million people watching. However, that’s what happened when early ratings showed the glamorous event drew just 900,000 viewers.

That number is a barely noticeable drop from last year’s ceremony, which drew just 1.1 million viewers even though it was simulcast on TNT and The CW.

Deadline claims that while overall viewership is down, The CW’s viewership looks better than last year because TNT didn’t simulcast the show this year.

Additionally, the decline in viewership is similar to other award shows, which have lost a significant portion of their audience in recent years. In fact, NBC posted its lowest ratings ever when it aired the Golden Globes on Tuesday, January 11, drawing 6.3 million viewers.

During the three-hour Critics’ Choice broadcast, A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned five accolades, including Best Picture, Best Editing for Paul Rogers, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, Best Director for Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — and Best Original Screenplay for Daniels.

Although Quan is the only actor from the award-winning sci-fi adventure film, he’s not the only acting contender. Michelle Yeoh was in the running for Best Actress but lost to Cate Blanchett for the 2022 musical drama “Tár.”

Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu are also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. Unfortunately, they both lost out to Angela Bassett for the role of Ramona in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Others earning accolades were Brendan Fraser for Best Actor for “The Whale” and Bob Odenkirk for Best Actor in a Drama Series for “Better Call Saul.” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” won Best Acting Ensemble, while Best Comedy Series went to ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.”

As we previously reported, the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards drew a record low rating of 6.3 million viewers. According to The Blast, that number is an unexpected drop following the good it enjoyed in 2020 when 18.3 million watched the broadcast.

This year’s event was so bad that it earned a 1.1 ad rating, down 9% (compared to 6.9 million viewers in 2021) and down 26%, respectively. The drop didn’t stop NBC officials from declaring that the venerable show was “the most social special across all of television’s seasons to date (linear and streaming), both in terms of social engagement and social video views.”

According to them, the proof is that the Globes “got nearly 11 million digital page views and video views, up +54% from 2021” across NBC Digital and E! News platform.

Unlike the Critics, the Globes’ downfall can be traced to the backlash they’ve experienced in the last two years. In case you missed it, the organizers of the event, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), were accused of dubious financial practices in and of having little evidence of diversity and representation of Black members.

The allegations were so widespread that the nonprofit group hosted a private event that excluded the nominated celebrities last year. Its newly appointed president Helen Hoehne finally addressed the issue publicly and announced that the organization had undergone several reforms.

To that end, NBC has signed a one-year broadcast deal with HFPA and Globes producer Dick Clark Productions. The deal leaves room for HFPA and DCP to “explore new opportunities for domestic and global distribution across multiple platforms in the future.”
