The long and detailed teaser for the upcoming six-part program explains everything that the series has to offer. The Middle East is notorious for its gender imbalance. Netflix is preparing to dive into the Arabian Nights and portray how two women in the 1980s chose to swim against the tide. The teaser also states that the series is based on true events, hinting that it is part of American history. The trailer depicts how the men do not want involvement in “their” business world, eventually leading to a significant conflict between them and Farida and Munira after a long introduction to women and the world of banking. Farida and Munira will be interesting characters with their own storylines as well.

The synopsis of the show is as follows:

“Set in Kuwait in 1988, on the brink of Saddam Hussein’s invasion of the country, two women go to the men’s club of the Kuwait Stock Exchange.”

Nadia Ahmad, Anne Sobel, and Adam Sobel founded The Exchange. In an interview with Variety, Ahmad and producer Abdullah Boushahri revealed a lot about the project, including their vision for it. Nadia Ahmad seems to have chosen this topic because of her own financial background.

Nadia Ahmad explained in the interview:

“Investment banking was an important deal in Kuwait in the 1970s and 1980s. There’s enough money to go around, but not enough people to manage it, you know what I mean? … My mother is a single mother who is fully responsible for my financial well-being.

Ahmad went on to say:

So she went into investment banking, and I was always surrounded by women who did the same thing, which violated preconceptions about Khaleeji [Arabic Peninsula] female. These women are trailblazers, the first to enter this male-dominated arena.”

During the same interview, Boushahri commented on the matter, saying:

“It’s a workplace narrative, so it’s quite difficult to make it funny. So, at first, the topic seems quite difficult. I’m worried about joining a program that’s only about offices and individuals, making it difficult for viewers to follow.”

The Exchange will be available on Netflix on February 8, 2023. Stay tuned for additional information.
