Members of the “Friends” cast were conspicuously absent from the invite list for Monday’s 75th Annual Emmy Awards, where there was a memorial tribute to the late Matthew Perry.
Executive producers Jeannae Rouzan-Clay and Jesse Collins share with Hollywood Reporter that the decision not to invite them was influenced by how “fresh” Perry’s loss was for the cast. “It’s still very fresh for them,” Rouzan-Clay empathized.
Collins added that they were “talking about” inviting ’90s sitcom stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. However, they choose to resist it, understanding their need for privacy.
“I can imagine, from their side, they are mourning someone who is still very close to them,” Collins explained. “I can’t speak for them, but we all have to respect that they are their own family. It might be too soon.”

Collins further explained that the decision to exclude the cast of “Friends” from the invitation was to avoid playing favorites among those remembered.
“Yes, Norman Lear and Matthew Perry, you have to pay special attention to, but you don’t want anyone to feel slighted,” he said. “Everyone’s contribution is important, and this is their moment in this package.”
During the Emmy Awards’ memoriam segment, Charlie Puth performed “See You Again,” seguing into the “Friends” theme song “I’ll Be There For You.” The tribute featured a host of late stars, including Perry, who was one of the final honorees.

However, while they were absent from the ceremony, Perry’s co-stars found other ways to honor their late friend.
In a statement to Many people in October 2023, the actor stated: “We are all very saddened by the loss of Matthew. We are more than just cast mates. We are family.”
“There is much to say, but for now we will take some time to grieve and process this unexpected loss,” they added.
Shortly after breaking their silence, each of the surviving cast members took to Instagram to write lengthy and personal tributes to Perry. They expressed how important he was to them and how sad they were to lose him.
Last December, Aniston, discussed Perry’s sobriety with various, revealed they were in touch until his last day. She shared, “I actually texted him that morning, funny Matty. He’s not in pain. He’s not struggling. He’s happy.
She added, “I want people to know that he’s really healthy, and getting better. He’s really been treated hard. I miss him so much.”

Perry died on October 28, after he was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles, at the age of 54.
An autopsy report later confirmed the cause of death for the famous actor as “acute effects of ketamine.” Other factors in his death were drowning, coronary artery disease, and the presence of the opioid, buprenorphine.
Before his death, Perry publicly discussed his 18 months of sobriety and shared that he underwent “ketamine infusion therapy” for depression. The autopsy report further explained that ketamine in his system at the time of death was unlikely from recent therapy “because the half-life of ketamine is 3 to 4 hours or less.”
In his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers and Big Awful Things,” the “Fools Rush In” actor also opened up about his journey to sobriety and the importance of sharing his story.
“I want to share when I’m safe from going to the dark side again,” Perry said. “I had to wait until I was relatively sober—and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction—to write it all down. I’m pretty sure that it would help people if I did.
