Kristen Lovell and Zackary Drucker, who represent the LGBTQ community and are known for their films Random Acts of Flyness (2018) and She Gone Rogue (2012), respectively directed the documentary. The film is inspired by Kristen Lovell’s real-life experience as an as*x worker in New York City in the 1990s, when she chose the industry as a last resort after being rejected by other career prospects because of her gender identity.

According to HBO’s official website, the film was inspired by Kristen Lovell’s real-life experience when she first moved to New York City and began working as a sex worker after being fired from a coffee shop because of her transition as a transwoman. He said,
“Like many transgender women of color during this era (the 1990s), Kristen Lovell began working in an area known as The Stroll in the Meatpacking District of lower Manhattan, where transgender women gathered and formed deep friendships to protect each other. other than harassment and violence.”
He further said,
“Reuniting her sisters to tell this quintessential New York story from their first-hand experiences, Kristen’s intimate narration and interviews bring a stunning array of New York archival material from the 1970s to the early 2000s to life.”
Presenters, including filmmaker Kristen Lovell, can be seen in the teaser navigating the fourteenth street known as “The Stroll,” interviewing 11 trans women who have worked there for periods ranging from 2 to 25 years. They reveal their harrowing experiences and how, as trans people of color, they often experience prejudice from both their neighbors and clients, who end up exploiting them. The trailer also criticizes the media outlets of the 1980s, which often refer to them as “criminals,” contributing significantly to their criminality.
Their allegations include being accused of murder, detained by officers using their services, dragged by a car for half a block, chased out of the area, and beaten but not given hospital treatment, among others.
Despite the common tragedies, the group came together to fight for fair treatment and respect and refused to discuss sex work with shame or stigma. Members of this group also discussed their experiences protesting for equal rights. One of them stated in the teaser,
“The system has never given us resources; we created them.”
The Stroll received excellent feedback after its Sundance Film Festival premiere. The HBO documentary, which debuted on January 23, 2023, at the Sundance Film Festival, received excellent reviews from critics. It has an IMDB rating of 7.7/10 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 8.2/10.
