These weather patterns could spell disaster for Thanksgiving travel

Millions of people will soon be on trains, planes and cars as people make their annual Thanksgiving pilgrimage.

Deloitte’s 2023 vacation survey found that 48% of Americans plan to travel during the holidays.

That’s up from 31% who traveled between Thanksgiving and mid-January last year.

Relatively calm weather has dominated the US for the past few weeks, but computer models show a more active scenario could unfold once the Thanksgiving journey begins.

“It’s too early to put any numbers on it, but just be aware that we may be seeing a little bit of an active pattern,” FOX Weather Meteorologist Jane Minar said.

Here’s a broad shot of the forecast leading up to one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Forecast details will become clearer as the travel period approaches.

Pre-Thanksgiving Review

A change in the pattern begins towards the end of the week as the jet stream begins to descend to the south.

The FOX Forecast Center is monitoring possible storms on both sides of the country through the end of the week.

This could mean snow across the northern tier of the country, with heavy rain possible across the southern tier between November 16 and 19.

This will likely create more opportunities for travel problems leading up to Thanksgiving week.

Thanksgiving week review

The Climate Prediction Center is calling for above-average temperatures and precipitation across the eastern two-thirds of the country during Thanksgiving week.

The West should expect below average temperatures and an average chance of precipitation throughout the week.

The FOX Forecast Center is watching for the potential for stronger storms to develop in the western US during Thanksgiving week.

This means heavy snow, strong winds and rainy weather across the region.
