This “Barbie” Made $1 Billion But Will She Be Back For A Sequel?

Only 50 movies in Hollywood history (adjusted for inflation) have topped the billion dollar mark and “Barbie” is one of them.

Forget superheroes, it seems sometimes, dolls are enough although fans are wondering, will this “Barbie” appear on the screen in the sequel?

Margot Robbie’s $1 Billion “Prophecy” Comes True!

Margot Robbie not only starred in the film as the stereotypical Barbie but also a blockbuster hit producer. She admitted in an interview last month that she had to pull out the big guns when she went in to convince Warner Bros. and Mattel to make “Barbie.”

Said Robbie, “I think my tone in the greenlight meeting was that studios have grown so much when they’ve been brave enough to pair big ideas with visionary directors. And then I gave a series of examples like, “dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg,” this and that, that and that – name anything that’s unusual and made a lot of money for the studio over the years.”

Finally, Robbie made a prediction about the movie, which he considered an oversold at the time, admitting, “And I was like, “And now you have Barbie and Greta Gerwig.” And I think I told them it was going to make a billion dollars , which I might be overselling, but we have a movie to make, okay?!”

Guess it’s not an oversell but the truth is, given its nearly three weeks of release, writer-director Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster has collected an astounding $1.03 billion at the global box office, as reported by CNN.

Will The Success Of “Barbie” Spawn A Sequel?

Greta Gerwig has no idea about a "Barbie" sequelMEGA

Despite the massive success of the film which made Greta Gerwig the first solo female director to own a billion dollar film, the sequel remains in limbo. According to Consequence, neither Greta Gerwig nor lead actors Robbie and Ryan Gosling signed any contracts requiring a sequel.

In fact, Gerwig was allegedly approached about a sequel before the film was released, but she put negotiations on hold, asking for the film to be released first. Since the film was released to great success, the fact that none of the actors had a contractual obligation to make a sequel allowed them to get away with it. Also, the SAG-AFTRA strike is affecting writers and actors, so negotiating a new contract is likely to face obstacles. If a “Barbie” sequel isn’t made, it will be a rarity in Hollywood, where movie franchises are often squeezed to the max to generate wild profits.

Gerwig also told Us Magazine that she ran out of ideas when it came to the sequel, saying, “I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’m going to have no other ideas and everything I want to do, I do. I don’t want to undermine other people’s dreams but for me, at the moment, I am at zero level at all.”

Until then, it’s best to watch it in theaters first!

Dolls Resound Around the World

Despite receiving a great response from film critics and many men around the world about “Barbie” portraying Ken as a supporter with some major self-esteem issues, the film has rocked the world’s theaters performing very well in some of the world’s biggest film markets, including the United Kingdom, Mexico and Australia. It is also doing well in China and part of the phenomenon behind its success is that little girls and their mothers still relate to Barbie, as a memory of their childhood.

From dressing all in pink to really understanding the existentialist questions behind the film, it seems the audience is more awake for having seen “Barbie.”

Sequel or not, the movie opened up a whole new world of toys first and then movies so who knows what else Mattel might bring to life on the big screen next…

Meanwhile, we have to admit, Ryan Gosling has proven he’s “Kenough” more than once, and not just in the movie because he sent a flash mob to wish Greta Gerwig a happy birthday! Need we say more?
