Barney The Dinosaur Is Back In The Spotlight
30 years after the premiere of “Barney And Friends,” Barney-mania is back in the spotlight, re-examined through Peacock’s two-part documentary, “I Love You, You Hate Me.”
The documentary looks at not only the cultural impact of Barney’s influence on children in the early 90s but elements of the Barney-hating subculture; several prominent figures behind the ‘Anti Barney’ movement are interviewed in the documentary.
The surprising rise of anti-Barney culture is compounded by the inclusion of Barney creator Sheryl Leach’s early inspiration and messaging behind the character.
“Barney means inclusion, acceptance. You’re supposed to love everybody, we all have Sheryl Leach to thank for that,” is a quote used in the documentary from a member of the ‘Barney’ crew. (via The Blast)
As well as the revamped dino’s new animated look, fans were quite surprised by the footage included in the documentary trailer!
“Whole childhood messed up, but I watched bc huh,” tweeted a shocked fan. “Well why are you guys going to give adults more childhood trauma, I don’t want to know the story behind barney,” the stunned follower tweeted.
“Soo y’all will just keep tarnishing our childhood memories,” another follower asked on Twitter. “…a copy!”
However, another group of viewers chose to view the documentary through a sociological lens; Why do loving and kind dinosaurs make adults react with hatred and anger?
“So this isn’t really about the drama behind the show but more about how adults hate this kind of thing,” said one Twitter user. “When Barney became popular, adults came up with all these conspiracy theories to ruin a show meant for kids.”
“We don’t care,” said another Twitter user. “Baby Bop [and] Barney never presented anything dark. They are our homies! If behind the scenes, they are adults.”
The documentary also featured celebrity interviews; Bill Nye and Al Rocker are on hand to give their thoughts on Barney’s legacy.
What’s the Deal With the New Animated Barney?
MEGA
A new generation of children will soon have the opportunity to befriend a new incarnation of their beloved children’s best friend.
Barney will return to pop culture in full force next year; according to NPR, Mattel Inc. is behind the “total revitalization of the ‘Barney’ brand.” In addition to the animated series, a variety of merchandise will be available, as well as “films, YouTube content, music, toys, books and clothing for children and children at heart”.
Reactions to Barney’s new look from the “kids’ hearts” were many, and many of them were surprised.
“Idiots turned Barney into a purple alligator?” asked one Twitter user.
Veronica McDonald tweeted, “They gave it a Barney touch, pointed nose, and bigger veneers. Sad.”
“People who make videos like ‘Childhood is dead’ after one Barney reboot image make me wish such videos never existed,” a clearly the audience. “I’m afraid companies will cancel stuff just based on certain groups’ hatred of new animated stuff coming out.”
They added, “Hopefully not. Childhood cannot be specified there because of the new version at all. I personally would be offended [sic] if the original plans were deleted and destroyed forever in favor of the new version but not? This is not the case (and even that is not the new version’s fault.)
“No one, absolutely no one, asked for this,” another Twitter user wrote. “What kind of test group did they use to give them the idea that anyone would want to reboot Barney?”
“Barney’s mascot is a GOAT,” other Twitter users weigh in. “Reboot looks like she got botox.”
“The new Barney looks weird,” a tweet audience. “I want the old Barney back. #BarneyReboot And lmao no I’m not watching the new show or anything. See the new picture. Yikes.”
Not all of the reception to Barney’s revamped new look has been negative.
“Tbh the new Barney isn’t that bad as it’s clearly a reboot for a new generation of kids with a more updated design. is it too hard to understand?” a asked the audience.
