Israel’s Health Ministry issued guidelines to local hospitals to feed malnourished patients as they prepare to receive 50 hostages released by Hamas in a ceasefire deal, according to reports.

Official guidelines address “treating refeeding syndrome in returning captives,” according to Israeli news channel Ynet, referring to a condition that can be fatal in people who have not eaten properly for a long period of time and are suddenly introduced to a normal diet.

“Prolonged nutritional problems can lead to significant nutritional deficiencies that can affect health and even pose life-threatening risks,” the guide explains, and breaks down the recommended diet by age group.

Children between the ages of one and three should be given water, sweet biscuits, applesauce without sugar, tea sweetened with a teaspoon of sugar, the guide said.

Adolescents and adults should be given water, a hot drink sweetened with a spoonful of sugar, three sweet biscuits, and unsweetened applesauce.

Refeeding syndrome is caused by sudden changes in fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic intake, according to the National Institutes of Health. Patients who are not given adequate sustenance within ten days are susceptible to infection.

It is unclear how the 240 hostages taken by Hamas during their bloody October 7 surprise attack are faring.

During their 54-day detention, most are believed to have been held in an intricate network of tunnels hidden beneath Gaza.

Israel and Hamas agreed to terms for a four-day ceasefire expected to begin at 7 a.m. local time (12 a.m. ET). In return for the release of the hostages, Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners and send a truckload of oil and humanitarian supplies to Gaza.

The first ransom will be handed over at 4pm on Friday. Children will be sent to Schneider Children’s Medical Center, according to Ynet, and adults will be sent to Wolfson, Ichilov, Soroka, and Sheba hospitals.

The families of the hostages requested specific guidance on refeeding syndrome to be sent to the hospital, said Professor Hagai Levin, head of the medical team assigned to the families of the hostages.

“[It’s] it is necessary to maintain a calm and unhurried approach to improving everything at once but gradually over time and in the right way,” said Levin.

“In terms of physical activity, one should act according to the same principles, as well as regarding mental health. In broader aspects, such as dental care, for example, the situation is not always adequately addressed in hospitals,” he added.
