Meet Thomas Abreu, New York’s Scooter Suspect
According to ABC7, Thomas Abreu has been named as the person suspected of riding illegal scooters across Brooklyn and Queens in New York City and shooting random individuals, killing a man in his 80s. During a press conference, police commissioner Edward Caban stated that the perpetrators shot four “innocent people tragically killing one.”
The shooting occurred on July 8, 2023. Although authorities reported that the deceased was 87 years old, ABC7 identified him as 86-year-old Hamoo Saeidi.
Edward Caban claimed that the suspect traveled from place to place using an illegal scooter without plates. According to him, using an important message alert, police pulled the footage and forwarded it to all New York police officers’ smartphones on duty. Caban claimed that it “became clear these shootings were carried out by the same perpetrator.”
The New York Post received information that the shooter was “very emotionally disturbed.”
Armed with pictures of the perpetrators, officers “spread out” across Queens, concentrating on busy streets, Caban claimed. They found a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine once they saw the shooter on the scooter, according to Caban. He expressed his gratitude to the police for arresting the perpetrators and expressed “the violence that these individuals are willing to commit.”
Edward Caban praised the police, saying, “You are relentless in your work.” The New York Post was informed by a source that the weapon was a “ghost gun.”
Five incidents occurred in Brooklyn, and four occurred in Queens, according to Joseph E. Kenny, Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Detectives, who spoke at the news conference. He said the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.
According to Kenny, the first incident involved a 21-year-old Hispanic man who was shot once in the left shoulder. He is expected to live. A 9mm bullet casing, according to Kenny, was found at the site. According to Kenny, detectives were able to quickly gather video showing a Hispanic man riding a scooter behind the victim and opening fire.
“We were inside and we heard like three shots – pow, pow, pow – one behind the other,” a nearby shop owner told The Post. “I looked outside but I didn’t see him. People said he was riding a motorcycle on the sidewalk just shooting randomly. People screamed and ran.”
At 11:27 a.m. or seventeen minutes after the initial shooting, a man was shot on Jamaica Avenue in Queens, according to Kenny. A shot was fired at him. According to Kenny, the Asian man in his 80s who opened fire at the nail salon while riding a scooter has died. The New York Daily News reports that this victim can be seen walking down the sidewalk in one of the horror movies that have appeared.
The suspect, a “Hispanic male, 25,” was characterized by Kenny as having “one prior arrest in New York City.” He did not mention the purpose. According to sources cited by Position, the arrest was related to a “false instrument.” Police said they do not know the cause of the shooting but believe it was random.
Saeidi’s family is now dealing with the tragedy and the victim’s son, Alsaedi told CBS News, “My heart is broken and my family, everything is broken … We can’t believe what happened. We all work hard. We never had any problems, and look what happened to it. He was eventually killed for no reason. I need justice… Not just us. There are several other victims who are seeking justice.”
Alsaedi added that his father was shot while on his way to the mosque. Although they believe the criminals chose their victims randomly, the police have not yet released any information regarding the suspect’s motivation.
According to Joseph Kenny, Assistant Chief of the NYPD Bureau of Detectives. “We don’t know the motive. It seems that this is actually random. At this time, the video shows that he is not targeting anyone, he is not following anyone. While he was driving his scooter, he was shooting people at random.”
