Three popular dog foods recalled due to potential salmonella contamination

Three popular dog food products have been pulled from grocery store shelves across America over fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.

Mid America Pet Food has voluntarily pulled Victor Super Premium Dog Food Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula dry food from shelves after three lots were randomly tested at its Mount Pleasant, Texas, production facility which came back positive for salmonella, the US Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) revealed last Monday.

The recalled products come in 5-pound, 15-pound and 40-pound bags and are sold in grocery stores across the US.

The best by date is 12 June 2024 and the lot number on the back of the product bag is either 1000016890, 1000016891 or 1000016892.

Blue Ridge Beef issued a separate recall on their Breeders’ Choice raw pet food because some of their supplies tested positive for salmonella, the FDA announced on Oct. 27.

The FDA is advising all retailers and distributors who may carry the product to check their inventory and shelves and “immediately” remove the recalled bags.

“Do not sell or donate the recalled product,” the FDA said.

Pet owners are asked to destroy the food so that children, pets and wildlife cannot eat it.

Animals infected with salmonella may appear lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, or vomiting.

“If your pet has used the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the FDA said.

The risk of dogs contracting salmonella is low, but health experts warn that their four-legged friends can carry the disease and make their owners sick.

Humans who come into contact with the product should wash their hands thoroughly and clean any surfaces that the product may touch.

In humans, salmonella can also cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, with symptoms starting about six hours to six days after infection.
