Ticketmaster Faces Fraud Lawsuit From Taylor Swift Fans After Eras Tour Ticket Fiasco

Ticketmaster was sued by Swifties weeks after they canceled the sale of Taylor Swift Eras tour tickets.

Sales barely lasted a few days after the site used for ticket purchases was flooded with unprecedented traffic from eager fans and bots. The website crashed several times during the sale period, leaving many fans unable to purchase tickets.

Following the fiasco, several Swifties banded together to sue ticketing agencies, accusing them of misrepresenting their services and colluding with scalpers for their own gain.

According to New York Post, Ticketmaster has been sued by more than two dozen Swifties following its failed ticket sales for the multi-Grammy award-winning Eras tour last month. Angry fans filed a 33-page lawsuit in a Los Angeles court on Friday, alleging the agency acted fraudulently and deliberately misrepresented their services.

The agency was given a deal by Swift to sell her tickets for her upcoming tour but was flooded with “historically huge” requests during her presale event. This led to website problems and long waiting times that left many fans impatiently without tickets even if they were willing to buy them.

To make matters worse, Ticketmaster decided to stop selling Swift’s tour tickets to the public a few days after they went on sale. Fans unable to get tickets online had to find them from resellers, who quickly listed them for thousands over the cheaper prices listed on the site.

Taylor Swift Loyalist Calls Ticketmaster

One of the plaintiffs in the suit, Julie Barfuss, previously tweeted that he had spent several days trying to get tickets to an upcoming tour using one of the recommended sites.

In a short clip uploaded on his social media platform, he showed receipts for all the charges made to his account by the site, amounting to over $10,000, but he was still not allowed to buy any tickets.

Following the filing of the lawsuit, Barfuss spoke with Postalshares more insights on how he ended up without a ticket.

He said, “I think Ticketmaster really screwed up with this one. I did everything they asked. I’m a verified fan. I followed their instructions, logged in early, used my laptop (not a mobile device) , waited a LONG time….FINALLY got the ticket in my cart, only to have the site crash, get thrown back in the queue, unable to get the transaction to go through.”

Ticketmaster Apologizes To Swifties

Ticketmaster issued a lengthy apology to Swifties, blaming the huge surge and bot attacks for creating massive demand that prevented many fans who had been verified Swifties and had received special codes for ticket purchases.

They also claimed that it would be impossible for Swift to perform the number of shows needed to meet demand even if there were no problems with ticket sales.

The announcement read in part, “Even when high-demand sales are going perfectly from a technology perspective, many fans are left empty-handed. For example: based on the amount of traffic to our site, Taylor would have to perform over 900 stadium shows (almost 20x the number of shows she does)… it was a stadium show every night for the next 2.5 years.”

Swifties Asking $2,500 Per Violation

Ticketmaster’s pleas seem to have fallen on deaf ears as many fans insist that the agency colludes with scalpers to prevent them from possibly buying tickets so that they get paid extra every time the tickets are resold.

The lawsuit filed by some of the fans asks the court to fine the company $2,500 per violation, in addition to reclaiming the costs incurred during the suit and any other form of relief as the court deems fit.

Despite the ticket failure, over 2.4 million slots have been sold ahead of the upcoming tour. The tour will last six months, starting in Arizona in March 2023 and ending in Los Angeles in August 2023.

The Eras Tour comes after Swift released her latest studio album, “Midnights” in October.
