The director and many others are hoping for at least an academy award nomination for his film Until which tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley the mother of Emmett Till a boy who was brutally murdered and his body dragged through the street by a group of white men after a white woman claimed he whistled at her.
He was upset and shared his feelings with his followers on Instagram. “We live in a world and work in an industry aggressively committed to upholding whiteness and perpetuating hatred of black women,” she wrote.
She continued, “However. I am forever grateful for the greatest lesson of my life – regardless of any challenges or obstacles, I will always have the power to cultivate my own joy, and it is this joy that will continue to be one of my greatest forms of resistance. ✊? “
He shared the message alongside a photo of himself and Myrlie Evers-Williams, a civil rights activist, at the Los Angeles premiere of Till in October 2022.
‘Till’ Closes At Oscars

Not only was Chinonye Chukwu not nominated in the Best Director category, but the film missed out in all possible categories. Lead actress Danielle Deadwyler was shut out of the Best Actress category.
The film did not receive any music noms, it was also shut out of the supporting actor and Best Picture categories. This is strange because the film has received recognition at other major award shows.
Deadwyler has been nominated for his performance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the upcoming 2023 BAFTA Awards. He received Gotham late last year as well. If any Oscars could at least nominate Deadwyler, everyone seems to agree he gave a great performance.
Another Black Actor Shut Out at the Oscars

Talk of black actors being rejected has been around since the nominations were dropped. Fans were shocked to see Viola Davis and her movie King of Women wasn’t nominated for anything even though it got nominations from the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards.
Many are also aware that despite the many choices, there are no female directors in the Best Director category. A giant step back from Jane Campion’s two consecutive women’s wins in 2022 for Dog Powerand Chloé Zhao is only the second woman ever to win the award in 2021 for Nomadland. The first was Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for The Hurt Locker.

Director Until talked about the film in December 2022. “It prioritizes the Black point of view. It centralizes black women,” she said The Los Angeles Times. “It’s also uplifting, showing love, joy, and community alongside the pain that exists as a black person in the world. I’m really excited to tell this story that way.”
