Pixar boss Pete Docter also spoke about the disappointing box office numbers surrounding “Lightyear,” blaming unrealistic expectations.
“When they hear Buzz, they’re like, great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex?” Docter said, “And then we put them in this science fiction movie that they’re like, What? I think in how the characters are drawn, they are portrayed. It’s more science fiction. I think there is a discrepancy between what people want/expect and what we give them.”
The film is released on Father’s Day weekend in 2022 but faces stiff competition, including “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”
