Timbaland Praises Disgraced Singer R. Kelly As ‘The King’ Of R&B Despite Criminal Convictions

Timbaland has revealed that R. Kelly is still the best singer the R&B genre has ever produced.

The producer shared his thoughts during a recent podcast appearance, stating he would not disrespect the “I Believe I Can Fly” hitmaker’s music. He claims that Kelly’s art has nothing to do with his issues and, therefore, should not suffer for him.

Kelly is currently serving decades in federal prison on sex-related charges that came to light after the release of the Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly.”

Timbaland thinks that Kelly’s music has nothing to do with his problems and believes the singer is still the best in his genre. “R. Kelly is the king of R&B. We all know that guy,” said the music producer.

While talking to Shannon Sharpe of the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, he commented on the singer who was recently sentenced to decades in prison on sex-related charges.

“Everybody jumps when you say R. Kelly,” Timbaland said on the podcast, per Insider. “I love it, so we’re just going to ignore the music he gave us, that we all jam to?”

Doubling down on his statement, the award-winning producer urged listeners to understand that good music transcends the personal problems of its creators.

“No, we can’t do that. His art is his art; I will not insult the man’s art,” he added of Kelly. “Don’t mix music with personal….don’t bring drama into music. Leave that out.”

While Timbaland felt that Kelly’s music was not worthy of criticism, many others did not share the same view.

A-listers like Jada Pinkett Smith, and Neyo, have been vocal about their distaste for Kelly’s actions. They called for his music to be banned from streaming sites after the #MuteKelly Campaign on Instagram in 2019 following the debut of the Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly.”

The singer was subsequently banned in 2021 from using or creating a YouTube channel, with the Google-owned platform also shutting down previous channels RKellyVevo and RKellyTV. Both channels host official uploads of his songs and videos.

However, his songs remain on Spotify and Apple Music, allowing his die-hard fans to still have access to them.

However, he can no longer upload new music on the platform, as seen by the removal of the 13-track album titled “I Admit It,” which the singer released last December.

The singer is currently incarcerated in a federal prison, where he was sentenced to 30 years in prison in June 2022 on sex-related charges by a court in New York.

He sexually abused several underage girls, some as young as 13. He is also famous for marrying the late rapper Aaliyah when he was just 15 years old, after reportedly falsifying papers claiming he was 18. Kelly was 27 at the time and one of the highest-rated R&B singers.

Earlier this year, a Chicago court sentenced him to an additional 20 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a minor and producing child pornography.

Following the verdict, the sentences are expected to run concurrently, meaning the singer, 56, will serve 31 years in prison.

Prior to his trial, rumors of Kelly’s promiscuous behavior with underage girls had been swirling for years. However, the singer denied the allegations, saying they were aimed at ripping off his fortune.

In 2019, a Lifetime documentary titled “Surviving R. Kelly” finally came out in favor of his victim.

In the documentary, his victims spoke in depth about his manipulative actions, which began with him using their fame and love for her as his fans to prey on them and then being drawn into harem-like situations with other women.

Apart from pleasing him, they are forced into sexual intercourse and other for his other lewd and lascivious acts, which can sometimes involve his property.

Abundant documentary evidence and public outcry led to the eventual prosecution of Kelly and, finally, justice for his victims.
