‘Time capsule’ 1981 DeLorean found in Wisconsin barn with original tires and only 977 miles

It’s almost like stepping back in time.

The 1981 DeLorean — the gullwing car that took its star turn as a time machine in “Back to the Future” — was found in a Wisconsin barn, complete with its original tires and with just 977 miles on the odometer.

Mike McElhattan, owner of a business that specializes in repairing DeLoreans, didn’t think much of the call he got from New Mexico about the car until he learned it had less than 1,000 miles on it.

The original owner, known only as “Dick,” had kept the classic car in a shed.

The body was covered in dust and rat droppings, but the car was in good condition, down to the original tires and blue oil filter.

“This thing is literally a time capsule,” McElhattan said in a YouTube video about the discovery.

“The door works fine,” Dick says in the video, but warns the inside won’t smell so good.

When they opened the signature style door, they found four rats running around inside.

The car, produced in April 1981, had been sitting in a shed for so long it had accumulated in the ground.

“For me, what’s interesting about it, is that it’s completely original, right down to the original tires that came out of the factory in Belfast, Ireland,” said McElhattan.

The car needed a professional cleaning as well as some work to get the engine working before they could begin a complete overhaul.

McElhattan estimates it will take at least six months to get it back on the road.

DeLoreans were produced between 1981 and 1982 before the DeLorean Motor Company went bankrupt. Only about 9,000 of the unique cars were ever made

The company originally planned to make 25,000 cars a year before going bankrupt and had stocked its warehouse with enough parts that even today’s DeLorean drivers could still get their hands on them.

As for Dick’s car, which could fetch up to $85,000, according to USA Today, McElhattan doesn’t know if he’ll sell it.
