While technology helps us connect, it also sometimes has unintended consequences. The actor and producer recognizes the toll technology can take on people and has partnered with UScellular to encourage others to join Global Unplug Day on March 1.

Global Day of Unplugging is an annual awareness campaign that helps encourage people to take a break from technology and celebrate human connection.

It’s a known fact that Americans increasingly rely on their cell phones for work and entertainment. Data from a December 2023 survey commissioned by UScellular suggests that people may be reevaluating the role their phones play in their lives. The survey found that 41 percent of people said they could use time away from their phones and nearly a third of those surveyed said they want to take a deliberate break from their phones.

“It’s something I talk about a lot and I feel very strongly that as the world becomes more digitally connected, we end up becoming more disconnected because we don’t have that human connection. It is a touch; it’s eye to eye. I look at some of these kids and they can barely make eye contact because they’re so used to like, device, device, device, device. And it’s important to me to make sure we still have it. And that’s the message.” he exclusively told The Blast.

“The message is not that technology is bad. Technology is amazing, but it’s about reexamining our relationship with it and whether we’re taking enough breaks. Are we filling our souls with time and outside relationships and why is there an increase in depression and loneliness now that people are connected, we need to look at that and realize that there is a difference between digital connection and human connection, and we need both.”

Gellar wants people to realize that the idea behind Global Unplug Day is that “everything is healthier with a reset.”

“That’s why on January 1 it’s like dry January, all the gym memberships go up, it’s like a reset, okay, we’re ready to do this,” he said. “You do it with a different attitude than other months of the year, and that’s what Global Day is all about. It’s about taking that break.”

When someone Gellar recently talked to about a tech break telling her it was hard to go a full 24 hours, Gellar said that was “okay.”

“Gone an hour. Whatever works for you,” she says. “Take those breaks so you can say, I can’t do 24 hours, why can’t I do 24 hours? Because that’s how you’re going to learn about yourself.”

It’s Important to Teach Kids About Unplugging And Self-Regulation

The “Scooby Doo” star said that there are a few things he does at home to make it easier for his family not to rely too much on technology and to take regular breaks. Family dinner time means no devices at the table, and when her kids are home, Gellar’s phone is turned off.

That gives him time to read, shower and hang out with his kids without the distraction of technology. She also suggests thinking about things you haven’t had time to do lately, like catching up with old friends or taking a fitness class you’ve been meaning to try.

When it comes to the younger generation, self-regulation is an important skill to highlight.

“I cannot expect my children to control themselves in anything. It’s the same way we tell them you can’t drink soda, you have to eat, you can’t eat dessert. It’s up to us to teach them,” explained Sarah Michelle Gellar.

“I make the most of the screen time option so they get whatever amount of time a day we see fit and then it’s off. And if they want more time, they have to come to us and it’s up to us to say, oh, you know what, you haven’t been out, go get your basketball and go shoot some hoops or go see what the neighbors are doing. Or it’s drizzling, we can’t go anywhere, there’s work to do, keep going, this has extra hours. But then I can also determine what they watch.”

The mother of two explained that her son loves anime so when he watches, he watches with subtitles so that he is also reading and learning about other cultures at the same time.

“UScellular’s mission is to connect people to the things that matter most, but sometimes the technology that keeps us connected has unintended consequences when it doesn’t fit into our lives,” said Eric Jagher, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at UScellular.

“We encourage everyone to take part in Global Unplug Day to take a break from technology, celebrate human connection and reset their relationship with technology.”

UScellular recently launched a “Built For US” campaign to lead the conversation about a healthier relationship with technology. These include various programs – “Phone Down for 5 Challenges,” “US Mode,” “Smarter Starter Kit” and more.

“I hope people try it,” Sarah Michelle Gellar said. “If you share it on social media, we’ll donate to a great organization that really helps people with mental health issues to learn to unplug. You will appreciate the connection. It matters and it feeds your soul.”
