The Palestinian Islamist terror group Hamas launched its biggest attack on Israel in years earlier on Saturday, firing rockets from Gaza and sending fighters across the border.
Israel said it was on the warpath and began its own attacks on Hamas targets in Gaza, with Israeli media reporting gun battles between Palestinian militant groups and security forces in southern Israel.
The following timeline, which begins with Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, details major flare-ups in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups in the crowded coastal enclave, home to 2.3 million people.
August 2005 – Israeli forces unilaterally withdraw from Gaza 38 years after capturing it from Egypt in a Middle East war, abandoning settlements and leaving areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority.
25 Jan 2006 – The Islamist group Hamas wins a majority of seats in Palestinian legislative elections. Israel and the US cut aid to the Palestinians because Hamas refuses to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

June 25, 2006 – Hamas militants captured Gilad Shalit who was assigned to the Israeli army in a cross-border raid from Gaza, prompting Israeli airstrikes and incursions. Shalit was finally released more than five years later in a prisoner exchange.
June 14, 2007 – Hamas takes over Gaza in a brief civil war, ousting Fatah forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is based in the West Bank.
27 Dec 2008 – Israel launched a 22-day military offensive in Gaza after Palestinians fired rockets into the southern Israeli city of Sderot. About 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were reportedly killed before a ceasefire was agreed.

Nov 14 2012 – Israel kills the Hamas military chief of staff, Ahmad Jabari. Eight days of rocket attacks by Palestinian militants and Israeli airstrikes followed.
July-August 2014 – The kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers by Hamas led to a seven-week war in which more than 2,100 Palestinians were reported killed in Gaza and 73 Israelis were reported killed, 67 of them soldiers.
March 2018 – Palestinian protests begin at Gaza’s fenced border with Israel. Israeli soldiers opened fire to stop the protesters. More than 170 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in months of protests, which have also sparked clashes between Hamas and the Israeli army.

May 2021 – After weeks of tension during the fasting month of Ramadan, hundreds of Palestinians are injured in clashes with Israeli security forces at the Al Aqsa compound in Jerusalem, Islam’s third holiest site.
After demanding that Israel withdraw its security forces from the compound, Hamas launched a rocket attack from Gaza into Israel. Israel responded with airstrikes on Gaza. Fighting continued for 11 days, killing at least 250 people in Gaza and 13 in Israel.
August 2022 – At least 44 people, including 15 children, are killed in three days of violence that began when an Israeli airstrike hit a senior Islamic Jihad commander.

Israel said the strike was a prelude to an imminent attack by an Iranian-backed militant movement, targeting commanders and weapons depots.
In response, Islamic Jihad fired over 1,000 rockets at Israel. Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system prevented any serious damage or casualties.
Jan 2023 – Islamic Jihad in Gaza fires two rockets at Israel after Israeli forces storm a refugee camp and kill seven Palestinian gunmen and two civilians. The rocket sparked alarm in Israeli communities near the border but caused no casualties. Israel responded with airstrikes on Gaza.

Oct 2023 – Hamas launches its biggest attack on Israel in years from the Gaza Strip, with a surprise attack that combines gunmen crossing the border with a barrage of heavy rockets.
Islamic Jihad said its fighters had joined the attack.
