Tina Fey’s Daughters’ Advice Helped Keep New ‘Mean Girls’ Fetch

Will it be like the original “Mean Girls” movie? That’s what many people have in mind as they prepare to watch the new musical “Mean Girls” which will be released on Friday, January 12, 2024.

The new film, adapted from the original 2004 high school comedy and 2018 Broadway show, was written by Tina Fey. To make sure the new film is still as “silly” as the original, Fey refers to two important people in her life who have some insight into the new generation.

“This is not your mother’s ‘Mean Girls’.”

When the tagline for the new film was revealed in the trailer, some confusion and anger hit fans in their late 20s to early 40s. Fey wasn’t too happy with the millennial reaction, calling it “millennial narcissism.”

“That was Paramount’s marketing department and then the millennials were really tough,” Fey said USA Today, referring to the slogan. “It’s like, yeah, you’re getting older! It reveals a bit of millennial narcissism. As you were leaving, there were other people in the theater as well. And some of them may be older than you. It really centers them in the story.”

Fey’s 18-year-old daughter had some sage advice for her mother when she was approached about the new film – “Yeah, no. Don’t let the millennials overthink it!”

“I sometimes run things by my kids,” Fey says of daughters Alice, 18, and Penelope, 12. “Initially, there was a conversation about, ‘Is Burn Book still a physical book or should it be a personal Instagram?’ I know what my instincts are, but I run them by my children.

Why No Original Cast Reunion In The New Movie?

The new movie musical was almost a fun blast from past reunions for the original four leading ladies but ended up not happening.

During a recent interview with The New York Times, Fey confirmed that there were talks about getting Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried to all play small roles in the film, but unfortunately, that didn’t materialize.

“They were busy, so it didn’t come together,” he said. “But we try, and we all love each other.”

When asked what their roles would look like in the new film, Fey replied, “We’ll never know.”

Fey, who not only wrote the original script and starred as math teacher Ms. Norbury in the original film, reprises her role in the new film. His desire to revisit the iconic 2004 film comes from the gratitude he has for it.

“I have other things I want to do. But I am very grateful because this film seems to stick with people,” he said. “When I look at it, I remember how hard I worked on it in the beginning. I feel like brick and mortar was the absolute best job I was able to do at the time. It’s not perfect, but it holds water.”

Rachel McAdams, who played Regina George in the original film, recently told Variety that a Regina George cameo is almost a reality in the new film.

“Tina and I kind of tried out a few ideas, but it was hard to make it all work in the end,” he said. “I’m really disappointed in whatever he wants to do. I think the direction it’s going in is going to be great and I can’t wait to see it.”

When asked if a sequel bringing back the original cast to play their characters as adults could be a possibility, Fey said, she hasn’t really “thought much about it.”

“For me, part of why the stakes are so high in this story is because everyone is so young and the feelings are big, the love is big and the friendship is so big in a way. [that it isn’t with] middle-aged mothers,” Fey said Time. “I’d love to write about middle-aged people, but I don’t know.”

“Mean Girls” hits theaters on Friday, January 12, 2024.
