Tom Holland has been open about his struggles with alcohol.

Tom Holland Admits His Life Has Changed Positively Since Quitting Alcohol

Although Holland started acting as early as 2006, when he took on the role of Spider-Man in the MCU, he became a fan favorite. Besides being great on screen, the actor has endeared himself to the public through his openness about his personal struggles.

In his latest insightful conversation, the 27-year-old talks about his alcoholism without shame, starting with this admission, “I’m definitely addicted to alcohol, not avoiding it at all. I think anyone who drinks beer every day might have a bit of a problem.”

However, knowing he had problems wasn’t enough for the “Chaos Walking” star to change until last year when he overindulged during the 2021 holiday season. Reflecting on the process on Monday, the July 10 episode of the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, he said :

“I didn’t wake up one day and say, ‘I quit drinking.’ I, like most Brits, had a very, very drunken December. [It was] Christmas time, I’m on vacation, I drink a lot, and I can always drink a lot. I think I got my genes from my mother’s side in that regard — I can drink. And I decided to just give [it] until January.

Unfortunately, dry January was more work than he bargained for, because all he could “think about was drinking.” The intensity of his cravings began to worry him as it made him realize the possibility that he had “a little alcohol.”

“So I decided to punish myself and said, ‘I’m going to do February too. I will be off for two months. If I can take two months off, then I can prove to myself that I don’t have a problem,'” he said.

Holland’s desire to drink continued, and he “started to really worry” about an alcohol problem, eventually making him decide to go six months without a drink. In his words:

“I said to myself, ‘If I can do six months without alcohol, then I can prove to myself that I don’t have a problem.’ And when I got to June 1st, I was the happiest I’d ever been in my life.”

Since then, “The Crowded Room” actor has seen some big improvements in his life, including better sleep and better coping skills.

“Things that would go wrong on set, which would normally cause me frustration, I can take in my stride,” he said, adding, “I have better mental clarity. I feel healthier, I feel fitter.” His most notable triumph, however, has been seeing his mother, Nicola, take inspiration from his progress without alcohol and decide to embark on his own journey of sobriety, which has been “amazing” so far.

The British Academy Film Award winner said that reading about herself online sometimes sent her into a spin, a cycle she considered “very damaging” to her mental state. So she chose to “step back and delete the app” and focus on helping her mental health.

During the monologue, Holland identified Stem4, an app run by his parents’ charity ‘The Brothers Trust’ and designed to help teenagers better deal with their mental health issues. After stating that he wanted to highlight what the organization is doing, Holland asked viewers to “take the time” to watch and share the clip with others.

Additionally, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” actor explained more about the app in several parts of his lengthy Instagram caption. He has returned to the platform, focusing on promoting his Hollywood project.
