Tom Suozzi announces bid to reclaim his old seat from George Santos

Former Rep. Democrat Tom Suozzi announced Tuesday that he will enter a crowded race for the scandal-plagued Long Island-based House seat in 2024.

Suozzi represented the 3rd Congressional District from 2017 to 2023. He gave up the seat to run for governor, and was soundly beaten by incumbent Kathy Hochul in the Democratic primary.

“The craziness in Washington, DC, and the impossibility of George Santos remaining in the United States Congress is clear to all,” Suozzi said in a statement.

“I never sit on the sidelines. From the cost of living to immigration, crime, climate change, fighting terrorism in the Middle East and globally, and simply helping people, we need more common sense and compassion and less senseless chaos and fighting.”

Suozzi, 61, plans to hold an official campaign kickoff after the Nov. 7 byelection in the Empire State.

For weeks, he intended to run against Santos, who faces federal charges after admitting to many of his official biographies late last year.

Santos was indicted in May on charges including money laundering and lying to Congress in a financial disclosure.

Last week, former Santos campaign treasurer Nancy Marks pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy charges involving the congressman.

The Republican lawmaker has pleaded not guilty and has announced plans to defend his seat, despite calls for his resignation and a heated GOP primary featuring nearly a dozen key contenders.

In addition to Suozzi, other Democrats in the race include former New York City Council staffer Steve Behar, surgery center CEO Austin Cheng, former state Sen. Anna Kaplan, Nassau County legislator Josh Lafazan, nonprofit executive Zak Malamed and St. John’s University School from Law professor Will Murphy.

“After nearly a year of embarrassing representation in this district, Tom Suozzi thinks the voters of Long Island have forgotten that he left us to George Santos,” Kaplan said in a statement.

“The Democratic Party is a pro-choice party, and unlike Tom Suozzi, I will always stand up for women’s right to choose — period.”
