Top Dem strategist David Axelrod suggests Biden drop out of 2024 race

The Democratic strategist credited with leading former President Barack Obama to victory in 2008 has suggested President Biden drop out of the 2024 presidential race after a dire poll showed him trailing former President Donald Trump.

David Axelrod was referring to Sunday polling from the New York Times and Siena College that showed the president trailing Trump in the five key battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania — states that Biden won when he faced Trump in 2020.

Axelrod wrote on X that the data “will send tremors of doubt through [Democratic] Party” and would create “legitimate concerns” about asking the president to run for re-election.

“Only Joe Biden can make this decision,” he said of the 2024 presidential election.

“If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party,” he wrote.

“What he has to decide is whether that is wise; either for HIS interest or the country’s?”

Axelrod noted there is “a risk associated with changing course now, because there is little time left for the primary campaign – and the campaign is how we test the candidates.

“But there is plenty of leadership talent in the Democratic Party ready to emerge,” he wrote.

“POTUS is proud of his accomplishments,” Axelrod said before slamming Trump as a “dangerous, unhinged demagogue whose contempt for democratic rules, norms, laws and institutions should be disqualified.

“But the significance of the miscalculation here is too dramatic to ignore,” Axelrod said.

The poll of 3,662 registered voters in swing states showed Biden leading Trump only in the swing state of Wisconsin, and falling to Trump by margins of four to 10 percentage points among registered voters in five other states.

Voters preferred Trump over Biden on issues of immigration, national security and the current war in Israel, it found.

Two-thirds of respondents said the country is moving in the wrong direction under Biden, and only 37% said they trust Biden with the economy — compared to 59% who said they trust Trump, making it one of the biggest issue gaps the poll found.

Biden also lost support from much of his base, according to the poll.

Young voters under the age of 30 favor Biden by just one percentage point, and his appeal with Hispanic voters is down to single digits.

Meanwhile, Black Democratic voters have traditionally registered 22% support for Trump.

Most respondents cited Biden’s age as a factor, with a surprising 71% saying they felt Biden was “too old” to be president, including 54% of his own supporters, while only 39% felt the same about Trump, including 19% of Trump supporters.

The Biden campaign has tried to play down concerns about his age in recent weeks by highlighting Trump’s various mishaps and mishaps on the campaign trail — like not knowing which Iowa town he was in last month.

“There is anxiety among donors and some elected officials that Joe Biden will not be a strong candidate because of the doubts of the American people about his health. And that doubt has been expressed in the polls,” former Democratic National Committee Chairman Ed Rendell admitted in a WABC 770 interview with John Catsimatidis.

Still, Rendell is optimistic about Biden’s prospects over Trump.

“If you ask them … ‘If Joe Biden was running against Donald Trump, who would you vote for?’ they were almost unanimous that they voted for Joe Biden,” he said on “Cats Roundtable.”

“I think Joe Biden will run, can win, and will win – especially if his running mate is Donald Trump.”
