A top aide to Ukraine’s military commander was killed on his birthday Monday and his 13-year-old son was seriously injured when one of his gifts exploded inside his home in Kyiv.
Maj. Hennadiy Chastyokov, 39, died in a “tragic accident” after returning home with some birthday presents he had received from friends – not realizing a live grenade was included in the gifts.
Chastyokov began showing his gift to his family, when his teenage son began examining the weapon, according to a Telegram post from Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
“The boy first took the ammunition in his hand and started twisting the ring,” he wrote. “Then the soldiers took the grenade from the child and pulled the ring, causing a tragic explosion.”
Police also said the explosion was “a result of careless handling of ammunition,” and found five more live grenades at his home, Klymenko said.
The police were later able to find out which of Chastyakov’s fellow soldiers sent him gifts, visited the suspect’s house and recovered two more grenades.

The investigation is still ongoing.
