Tourist plummets 300 feet to his death after crossing ladder on Instagram-popular mountain

A 42-year-old British man plunged 300 feet to his death in Austria after slipping from a ladder bridge in the Dachstein Mountains, a popular spot with tourists flocking to get a good Instagram photo.

The unidentified victim was alone on the famous 130-foot staircase when he tripped and fell into the valley below, according to the Mirror.

A staircase connects the lower part of the Donnerkogel mountain to the Großer Donnerkogel or “Greater” part of the mountain which includes the 6,740 foot peak.

Investigators called the man’s fall an accident and ruled out any third-party negligence, the outlet reported.

The stairs were promoted as “the new TOP attraction in the Zwieselalm for climbing enthusiasts” by the Dachstein region’s tourism website, which stated that the ascent is done in four stages with the stairs waiting “as the ultimate adrenaline kick.”

The climb is listed as a via ferrata, or “iron route,” a climb that uses steel cables, rungs, pegs and ladders that climbers attach through harnesses for their safety.

Some cities in Austria are fed up with tourists invading their hometowns for social media content, some even begging to be left alone.

In May, the small hamlet of Hallstatt closed its famous lake view after tourists began taking over the town to see what is believed to be the inspiration for several scenes in the Disney movie “Frozen.”

Mayor Alexander Scheutz said his town of 750 residents still gets more than 7,000 visitors a day who are there to see the scenery that inspired “Arendelle” in the 2013 film.
