Trevor Noah Clarifies He’s Never “Argued” With Kanye West

“Why are you eating with Ye?” an audience member shouted during a break in filming an episode of “The Daily Show.” Noah jumped in and answered the question without hesitation saying, “That, that’s an interesting way to put it, because the beef has to go both ways,” he said. “In my limited understanding of the world, beef has always been something that would normally happen between two hip hop artists. I’ve never eaten with Kanye West. I care about Kanye West.”

Trevor Noah Discusses Mental Health Issues

Noah continued his answers to questions from audience members by discussing mental health issues and how they are sometimes abused. “If someone says to me, or to anyone, that they have a mental health problem, and they say to everyone that when they don’t take their medication, they can’t control themselves and then everyone ignores when that person has an episode and they don’t take their medicine, and then they put the person in and then they take him out. I’m embarrassed sometimes to be honest with you,” he explained.

“My grandfather is bipolar, and one thing we know in the family is, and I’m not saying Kanye, by the way, I’m just saying my grandfather is bipolar, and one thing we know is, you know, when he has one of his episodes, he can act a certain way, he can do certain things, he’ll get in the family car, he’ll go, he’ll drive, but our job is to support him.”

Trevor Noah Explains His Love For Kanye West

The host said he could understand why audience members would bring it up the way he did, asking Noah why he had “beef” with West. “It’s interesting how, you know, what you’re asking me makes sense, because that’s how you look at framing,” he continued. “If you’ve seen any of the comments I’ve made about him, it would have been worrying.”

Noah then explained that he grew up loving the West and how it shaped the way Noah saw music. He also mentioned that West’s mother had an influence on him, as well as her influence on hip hop culture, fashion, and how he changed paradigms. “I grew up loving this man. I still love him, even when he talks,” Noah said. “So to me, it’s not beef.”

Trevor Noah Says He Has Beef, But Not With Kanye West

Noah closed the discussion by saying that he has no “beef with people who have publicly stated that they are dealing with mental health issues.”

“I have no beef with that human. What I have a beef with is that we as a society don’t rally around someone and go like, hey, hey, hey, maybe this isn’t the time to put a microphone in your face, so you keep saying everything. If this is what you wanted to say when you were on medication, then that’s a different story, but since you’ve told us that, I’m not going to sit back and say that,” he said again. “I’ve promised myself that I’m not going to be the one to just sit and happily talk about my loved ones and then join the grieving group afterwards and act like I’m not a part of it.”
