Two-time Ring of Honor World Champion Jay Briscoe, real name Jamin Pugh, has died at the age of 38. The wrestler lost his life following a car accident earlier last week in Laurel, Delaware.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) founder Tony Khan announced the wrestling legend’s death on Twitter. Friends and colleagues have written messages of condolence in honor of the late star.
Jay, who made his wrestling debut for Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) alongside brother Mark Briscoe, is survived by his wife and four children.

“Unfortunately, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today,” the Ring of Honor owner wrote.
Also in his post, Khan praised the late pro wrestler and his brother Mark for “dominating ROH” as “a champion to this day.” He later insisted that he and his company would “fully support” the Briscoe family through this challenging period.
A follow-up tweet from Dave Meltzer, a wrestling journalist, detailed more information about the accident that killed Briscoe.
“Tony Khan tweeted the death of Jay Briscoe in a car accident. Two people in a car were killed in a crash at 5:30 pm in Laurel, Maryland. Just sad news,” Meltzer said before making the change, “Correction to the location of Jay Briscoe’s accident, it was Laurel, Delaware, not Maryland.”

Jay’s fellow wrestlers, both male and female, have mourned his death on social media.
“I am very saddened to hear of the loss of Jay Briscoe. He was always the best to me when I was in ROH. My heart goes out to the whole family,” read post from former AEW Chief Brand Officer, Brandi Rhodes.

Retired professional wrestler and WWE chief content officer Triple H also wrote a heartfelt note to Briscoe’s family and friends.
He said, “An incredible entertainer who created a deep connection with wrestling fans around the world. My condolences to the family and friends of Jay Briscoe.”
Sami Zayn also reflected on his relationship with the late star and his brother, touching on their good times together in the ring.
The WWE star said, per Many people, “I have no words right now to express my grief properly. I love Jay & Mark Briscoe. I’ve been so lucky to have shared a ring & shared so many laughs with Jay Briscoe, and I’m so sad to know this won’t happen again. RIP my friend.”
School Closed for Day in Honor of Jay Briscoe

In the meantime, it is unclear if any of Jay’s family members were in the car with him at the time of the accident, as the family has yet to release further details.
To mourn Jay’s passing, the school district where his daughter was educated closed for the day.
“Due to an unthinkable tragedy in our community this evening, the Laurel School District will be closed for tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18, 2023. School will reopen on Thursday. Please keep the Pugh Family in your thoughts and prayers,” read an announcement from the district, per Wrestling News.
Jay Briscoe Saved By His Wife And Four Children

The wrestler rarely shares information about his family on social media and keeps his personal life private. In early 2022, he posted a picture of his wife and children.
The picture was taken during Easter and shows his wife and three children at the time, a son and two daughters. Also in the image is the wrestler’s brother, Mark, and his own children.

Also, Jay’s Twitter image shows that he welcomed a baby boy named Murphy in June 2022.
“We have a baby, man!!! Murphy’ Big Murph’ Pugh came a month and a half early, but he’s getting stronger every day,” he write. “Appreciate constant and positive prayer.”
