The newly formed tropical storm is expected to become an “extremely dangerous” hurricane as it heads towards the Caribbean – potentially affecting shipping routes to the islands.
Tropical Storm Lee formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, but is forecast to become a major hurricane by the end of the weekend.
“It’s going to be a very strong storm very quickly,” Fox Weather meteorologist Cody Braud told The Post.
As of late Tuesday, the storm was located about 1,315 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.
It has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving west-northwest at 16 mph.
The National Hurricane Center issued a stern warning that Lee “is expected to become a very dangerous hurricane by the weekend.”
Although Lee is not expected to make landfall, forecasters are putting residents in the Leeward Islands on high alert as the storm moves toward the area.
The outer band of the storm may bring strong gusts, heavy rain, dangerous waves and very large waves, according to Braud.
Because Lee is expected to only hug the Caribbean islands and stay in open waters, cruise lines may feel more of the impact.

“That’s something we’re keeping a close eye on, just because you don’t want to get this close to a system this powerful and, eventually, it’s going to be a very large system as well,” Braud said.
“That will be something the cruise line is actively monitoring.”
Lee is expected to slow down before reaching the US, but it is too early to tell if his path will change.

Weather forecasters are putting East Coast residents on high alert for major unwelcome developments in the coming days.
“We can’t rule anything out with hurricanes… Any kind of swing, say to the south further west could end up with a big impact down the line,” Braud said.
Tropical Lee is the twelfth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and comes just a week after Hurricane Idalia battered Haiti and parts of the Florida Panhandle.

Idalia, the largest hurricane to hit Florida’s Big Bend region in more than a century, brought 125 mph winds and monster storm surges that knocked out power to at least 500,000 residents and left a trail of damage more than 100 miles wide.
Communities like Cedar Key, an island city about 90 miles southwest of Live Oak, bore the brunt of Idalia’s wrath.
