Trugoy the Dove, a famous rapper and member of De La Soul, died recently at the age of 54. On social media, several famous people paid tribute to Trugoy, alias David Jolicoeur. On Facebook, comedian Eric Schwartz posted a photo of David with the caption:
“For years, De La Soul struggled to reclaim the rights to their songs. Trugoy the Dove, nicknamed Dave, died just like them. De La Soul is a creative force that revolutionized people’s perception of what “rap” is. Great tracker and icon. Thank you very much, Plug 2.”
Quest Green, a motivational speaker, also shared his grief on Facebook, writing:
“Man… I am saddened by the loss of another dear brother. David Jode Jolicoeur, nicknamed Plug Two, or Trugoy the Dove of De La Soul… Thanks for the music, but even more for the memories. #delaforlife #dematlantadayzandnights.”
Although the cause of his death has not been determined, Trugoy has previously spoken about his health problems, specifically congestive heart failure.
In the Royalty Capes music video from 2017, Trugoy the Dove discusses his health issues.
Trugoy has long battled congestive heart disease, which has affected his career by forcing him to miss most of De La Soul’s concerts. Trugoy discussed his heart failure in the music video for De La Soul’s debut track, Royalty Capes, in 2017.
David was featured in the film at his home in suburban Maryland, where he talked about his life and what it’s like to live with a vest that protects him from congestive heart failure. David characterized the life jacket in the video as a mechanism that would shock him and bring him “back from the matrix.” He added that he can’t wait to get back on stage and that he misses traveling and performing.
