Trump demands primary challenger for pro-DeSantis Rep. Chip Roy — but it’s too late

Donald Trump has a chip on his shoulder — and on his mind.

The former president lashed out late Monday against Rep. Texas Chip Roy for his support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and urging someone to step up and launch a primary challenge against the “RINO” lawmaker.

“Has any intelligent and energetic Republican in the Great State of Texas decided to run in the Primary against RINO Congressman Chip Roy,” Trump, 77, wrote on Social Truth, using the common acronym for “Republican in name only.”

“For the right person, he is very beatable. If interested, let me know!!!”

There’s just one problem with Trump’s claim: The filing deadline is December 11 and there are no serious contenders running to unseat Roy.

The 51-year-old is a leading member of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, voting with President Biden just 2% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Roy was the first member of Congress to endorse DeSantis for president in March and was in Iowa to campaign with him on Monday.

DeSantis was quick to defend Roy after Trump’s shot went over the arrow.

“As @chiproytx fights to do what Donald Trump promised — protect our southern border — the former president is on social media demanding a primary challenge to one of the most conservative members of Congress (even though the Texas primary filing deadline passed a week ago.) ,” the 45-year-old wrote on X Tuesday afternoon.

“I stand with Chip and am honored to have his support. Time to talk is over. We must stop the invasion, and I will finish it.”

“Us ‘Rinos’ just doing our thing… #DeSantis2024 #DeSantisDelivers,” Roy posted on X Tuesday along with images of another study showing he scores “perfect zero” in terms of support for President Biden’s agenda.

Roy is scheduled to attend another DeSantis event in the Hawkeye State later this week, and threw shade at Trump during a Fox News interview Monday night.

“[Trump] in 2018 in favor of [then-House Speaker] Paul Ryan tried to pass the amnesty bill first, instead of prioritizing border security, which left us with the situation we’re in now,” he said.

Trump is the clear front-runner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, while Roy is running for a fourth term in the House of Representatives representing Texas’ 21st District, which covers the south-central part of the state, including several suburbs of Austin and San Antonio.

A spokesman for Roy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump and Roy have clashed in the past as well.

Roy voted to confirm Trump’s loss in the 2020 election to President Biden, breaking away from allies of the former president who fought to confirm the decision.

He also described Trump’s attempt to stay in office as “obviously unchallengeable conduct,” but later voted against it.
