Donald Trump endorsed former Navy SEAL and businessman Tim Sheehy in Montana’s US Senate race on Friday over Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), a supporter of the former president and member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.
Rosendale, one of eight GOP lawmakers who voted with Democrats to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last October, officially entered the race just hours before Trump endorsed his opponent.
“Tim Sheehy is an American Hero and a very successful Businessman from the Big Country of Montana,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “He is strongly supported by our incredible NRSC Chairman, Steve Daines, and the many other patriotic Senators and Republicans who have supported our Campaign to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump avoided attacking Rosendale in his endorsement of Sheehy, explaining that while he “respects” the congressman, he feels Sheehy is the “best position” to defeat incumbent Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.).

“I also respect Matt Rosendale, and have been very happy to Endorse him in the past – and will Endorse him again in the future should he decide to change course and run for his Congressional Seat,” Trump said. “But in these circumstances, Tim is the candidate now best positioned to DEFEAT Lazy Jon Tester, and Regain the Republican Majority in the United States Senate.”
Sheehy, a political newcomer, is a cattle rancher and founder of Bridger Aerospace, a fire and aerial fire management company.
His candidacy has also been supported by Republican South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and several GOP senators, including Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.).
“Tim is a Political Outsider, Strong on the Border, Military/Vet, and our Second Amendment under siege,” Trump argued. “He will stand tall in the fight against the Radical Left Democrats, who are Destroying our Country. Plus, he’s more likely to Defeat Lazy Jon.”

Meanwhile, Rosendale has already received support from Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Montana Senate President Jason Ellsworth and the lobby group Gun Owners of America.
His support for Trump seems unwavering despite not having his support..
“I like President Trump. But he needs a real fighter in the US Senate to enact his Agenda 47 – and that’s me and not Mitch McConnell’s handpicked Tim Sheehy,” Rosendale write on X.
“I will win this primary, defeat Jon Tester in November and together we will Make America Great Again!”
The Montana Senate primary election will be held on June 4.
