Former President Donald Trump posted his biggest lead yet against President Biden Sunday in a new NBC poll, as voters gave the incumbent a weak mark across the board.
Trump, 77, leads 47% to 42% over Biden, 81, among registered voters, marking an increase from the 46% to 44% advantage he had in a November poll from the outlet.
“This is the largest lead NBC has ever had in 16 polls for Donald Trump over Joe Biden,” NBC political reporter Steve Kornacki told “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
NBC has been running polls on Trump vs. Biden for about five years. Historically, Biden has had an advantage over his predecessors, but that began to change last year.
Last July, Biden led Trump 49% to 45%, but by September they were dead even at 46%. Then in November, Trump surged ahead.
The latest poll sampled 1,000 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points and was taken from January 26 to 30.
When third-party candidates are added to the mix, Trump’s advantage expands to six points, sending Biden 41% to 35%, with the Libertarian candidate gaining 5%, the Green Party gaining 5% and No Label reaching 4%.

The survey did not test environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or independent presidential candidate Cornel West.
Former US ambassador to the UN and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley trailed Biden 45% to 36% in the poll.
The Biden campaign declined to comment on the poll. However, former Biden 2020 campaign scout Matt Barreto flagged some concerns with his sampling to The Post.
“It overrepresents white and conservative voters and underrepresents Democrats and Latinos. It’s important to point out a poll’s weaknesses, as well as its findings, before pundits draw conclusions about the state of the race — especially when it appears to be an advantage when placed in the context of other polls,” he said.
“We know that 2024 will be very close and we also know that pre-election elections will happen everywhere.”
Separately, a subsample of Republican voters polled favored Trump over Haley 79% to 19% in the GOP primary contest, where Trump was the frontrunner.

The NBC poll also showed some warning signs for Biden ahead of a possible Nov. 5 rematch against Trump.
Biden’s job approval rating plummeted to 37%, with 60% disapproving of his performance in office. That was the lowest rating NBC has recorded since former President George W. Bush.
When stacked against Trump in the polls, Biden garnered 41% support from Latino voters to his predecessor’s 42%. Among young voters aged 18-34, Biden leads Trump 38% to 26%.
Despite the low unemployment rate and low inflation under Biden’s watch, 55% of voters said they trust Trump more with the economy than Biden at 33%.

By a 21-point margin, respondents said they trust Trump more than Biden to have “the mental and physical health needed to be president.”
Still, on a number of issues, Biden holds an edge over Trump, including trust among voters to protect democracy at 43% to 41% and on abortion by a 12-point margin.
The Biden campaign has repeatedly shrugged off dismal polling and pointed to Democrats beating polls and expectations in the 2022 midterm elections, as well as their victories in 2023 outlying races.
“We cannot lose this campaign for the good of the country. It’s not about me. It’s beyond me. It is about the country. I think everybody knows,” Biden announced after his primary victory in South Dakota.

The president and his allies have positioned the 2024 general election race as a battle to preserve American democracy.
NBC’s findings echo dozens of other polls that find Trump ahead of Biden, though most polls have both within the margin of error.
Trump leads 46.7% to 44.6% over Biden in the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate.
The 45th president also generally leads Biden in most RCP aggregates for battleground states, which will ultimately determine the outcome of the election.
